Description: The unit includes a fast track area with 4 beds. There are 32 beds and 6 treatment chairs available. There are specifically set up rooms for psychiatric patients, but other rooms are also utilized for this purpose. On average, the unit sees 208 patients per day, with a maximum of 317 patients during busier times. Nurse to patient ratios are typically 1 to 4, with a 1 to 1 or 1 to 2 ratio if patients are in ICU status. The Electronic Medical Record system in use is Cerner. Charge nurses are present, with an assistant nurse manager available 24/7. Nurse aides and paramedics function as ER techs, while CNAs and EMTs support the unit. Security staff are available in the lobby as needed, and CNAs may serve as patient sitters if required. Weekend work is required every other week, and holiday shifts will be worked in rotation with permanent staff. Scrub color is navy. Tele/monitor technicians use Phillips systems; nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting strips. Lab draws are not permitted to be performed by nurses. There is no IV team; respiratory therapy and pharmacy services are available 24/7. Shifts include 12-hour schedules, with varying start times. Floating to other locations for emergency room duties may be necessary. Floor-specific orientation will consist of 3 shifts. Common diagnoses include trauma, pediatrics (30% of the patient population), strokes, and STEMIs.
