Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician (PEM Faculty)
Phoenix Children's
When seconds count, families need more than clinical excellence—they need a system that’s built to show up, every time, with the right expertise and the right resources. The Division of Emergency Medicine and Urgent Care at Phoenix Children’s has become that system for Arizona. Since Phoenix Children’s opened its first free-standing hospital in 2002, the emergency department on the Thomas Campus has grown into the state’s only free-standing Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, caring for over 80,000 children each year. That scale matters. But so does the way care is delivered: supportive, collaborative, and child-centered—deeply connected to pediatric subspecialty support through Phoenix Children’s Medical Group, so emergent presentations can be met with comprehensive expertise when urgent becomes complex. The Moment & Opportunity Phoenix is expanding—and pediatric demand expands with it. Phoenix Children’s has responded by building a regional network designed to bring expert care closer to families across the region. In 2023, Phoenix Children’s opened a free-standing emergency department in the West Valley with an annual volume of 50,000 visits while providing 24/7 pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) coverage. In 2024, a satellite free-standing children’s hospital opened in Northwest Phoenix, serving 30,000 visits annually which also provides 24/7 PEM coverage alongside an operating room, inpatient floor, and pediatric ICU. And the next horizon is already in motion: Phoenix Children’s expects to open an additional satellite free-standing children’s hospital in the East Valley of Phoenix in late 2026/early 2027. This is also a moment of external recognition. Becker’s Hospital Review named Phoenix Children's one of the “100 Great Hospitals in America” for 2025, citing excellence in clinical care, innovation, research, and patient safety, as well as Phoenix Children’s transformative growth and innovative use of AI- and data-driven tools to enhance patient care. Scope & Impact This role is for a fellowship-trained Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician who wants both breadth and depth: the acuity and teaching environment of a tertiary free-standing children’s hospital, plus the opportunity to contribute to how a growing system delivers pediatric emergency care across multiple sites. You’ll practice across a network anchored by the Thomas Campus—home to complex medical care and the subspecialty services you would expect in a tertiary free-standing children’s hospital—and extended through new emergency and hospital sites across the Valley. You’ll join a team of nearly 100 providers (PEM physicians, general pediatricians, and APPs) working across emergency and urgent care settings. Urgent care is part of the system’s promise as well. Phoenix Children’s operates four urgent care centers across the Valley, staffed by pediatricians and APPs, offering evening hours on weekdays and weekend access for families when pediatric offices are closed. Education is embedded in the mission. Phoenix Children’s supports training from medical students through residency and fellowship. The Division’s accredited PEM fellowship program trains four fellows annually, and the Division partners with the residency programs at Phoenix Children’s and Valleywise, HonorHealth, and Dignity Health, as well as medical students from the University of Arizona and Mayo Clinic. Expectations for Outcomes Success here is defined by delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centered pediatric emergency care—while helping the Division grow thoughtfully across its expanding footprint. Deliver excellent pediatric emergency care aligned with Phoenix Children’s commitment to safe, high-quality, patient-centered practice. Support a consistent clinical experience for families across Thomas Campus and the Division’s expanding regional sites, including the planned East Valley satellite opening in late 2026/early 2027. Teach and mentor across the Division’s educational mission—supporting a PEM fellowship that trains four fellows annually and engaging with partner residency and medical student programs. Collaborate with pediatric subspecialties through Phoenix Children’s Medical Group to ensure patients have access to comprehensive expertise for urgent and complex needs. Qualifications Phoenix Children’s seeks a fellowship-trained Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician who is energized by the full spectrum of pediatric emergency medicine, committed to compassionate, child-centered care, values teamwork, and will contribute to a supportive, collaborative environment across a growing network. MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school. Completion of an ACGME-accredited Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship. Board Certified or Board Eligible in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Arizona State Medical license. Passion for kids and willingness to embrace the community as the system expands care across the Valley.
