Manager of Accounting

The AccountingManager provides oversight and support to the Finance Department and leads the accountingteam. The individual is skilled at transaction processing and review aswell as supporting the team in their responsibilities.The positionensures compliance with GAAP, in particular, aspects related to not-for-profit andcharity organizations. The Accounting Manager is responsible for assisting theDirector of Finance with budget development and monitoring, as well as assistingwith the issuance of internal and external financial statements. This positionwill often be working under deadlines and must exercise professional judgment. The Accounting Manager provides input into the plans fororganizational and operational strategies for the Agency, and as it relates to accounting.TheAccounting Manager will have direct contact with MCSS Directors and Managers, whichrequires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal. What you'll do: Oversees a team of employees who provide accountingservices for the organization, including accounts payable, accounts receivable,reconciliations, petty cash, monthly financial transactions and reports, ledgerentries, reporting of variances, and other financial reports. Provides support, leadership, direction,andsupervision to direct reports using a variety of techniques including coaching,training, skill development,discipline,and attendance management. Evaluates the performance of direct reports on aregular basis and provides feedback. Conducts six-month probationary period and yearlyperformance evaluations. In collaboration with the Director, identifies staffneeds such as training,management,and personal development. In collaboration with the Director and Human ResourcesDepartment, managesand followsthehiringprocess for all new hires, includingvolunteers and practicum students, including recruitment, selection,onboarding, training, and preparing/updating job descriptions, asrequired. In partnership with the Director, recruits, selects,onboards, trains, and assigns duties to practicum students and volunteersaccording to agency policy and best practices, in coordination with the HumanResources Department and Volunteer Coordinator. Conducts regularlyscheduled meetings with staff to provide ongoing support and problemresolution. Manages andapproves payroll hours, expense claimsand schedules for direct reports. Program Operations Assists theDirectors and Program Managers in the development and monitoring of budgets foreach program, investigating variances with the team, and submits to theDirector for review. Assists the Director with the interpretation andreview of MCSS policies and procedures, providing recommendations for change. Supports the Director in implementing and managinginitiatives that support the desired organizational culture and organizationalchange. Provides guidance, support and oversight to programareas and administration, providing advice and direction as per best practices,policies, and procedures. Develops andimplements new procedures and features to enhance workflow. Monitors and analyzes the work of the Program todevelop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a highlevel of accuracy. In collaboration with the Director, assists indeveloping, implementing, and administering the department’s and/or program’sstrategic plan. Responds to inquiries from the Director,or from other Directors and Managers in other departments of MCSS, regardingfinancial results, and special reporting requests. Maintains anawareness of trends and initiatives in the assigned areas of responsibility. Finance Assists with the preparation of accurate andmeaningful internal financial statements for the Finance Committee,Departmental Directors, Managers, and Funders. Assists the Director in the preparation of year-endfinancial reports and financial statements for audit purposes, and to ensure anefficient, accurate, and timely year-end audit. Ensures all financial information has been processedin accordance with MCSS financial policies, generally accepted accountingprinciples (GAAP), and funder expectations. Reviews monthly variance reports and takescorrective action as required. Administration Assists with Program administrative tasks, collectingand managing employee documentation as required. Keeps up to date and ensures compliance with variousProgram related legislative requirements and emerging trends. Participates in relevant committees, working groups,and associations, as required. Remains in compliance with MCSS Finance policies. Represents the Agency and the community ina professional and knowledgeable manner. Participates in all MCSS essential training. Assumes other responsibilities as assignedby the Director. What you bring: Education and Certification Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline. Accounting designation, CharteredProfessional Accountant (CPA), or actively working towards a CPA designation. Must maintain a satisfactorycriminal record check. Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience andresponsibility in full cycle accounting which includes revenues andreceivables, expenses and payables, and payroll. Knowledge and Skill Set: Strong verbal, written, and activelistening skills; able to communicate effectively and respectfully with a widevariety of people, and from all levels within the organization (e.g.,employees, senior management, peers) and external partners (funders, clients,vendors). Able to effectively relay accountingpolicies and procedures in plain language that is easily understood. Demonstrated planning, organizing, andtime management skills; able to manage competing priorities and ongoing issuesand initiatives. Demonstrated ability to think critically,systematically, and analytically, taking a holistic approach to developing andimplementing processes, policies, and practices across the agency. Strong research and analytical skills;able to create and implement analysis and evaluation tools. Demonstrated supervisory skills includingcoaching, mentoring, goal setting, problem solving, building relationships andtrust, and creating autonomy and accountability. Strong computer literacy; able to use avariety of devices, software, and applications including Microsoft Office365and virtual meeting platforms such as Microsoft Teams. Proficient in using Excel and accountingsoftware. Demonstrated facilitation skills; able toeffectively facilitate and lead in a variety of situations. Effective interpersonal skills.
