Application Engineer II

AVL Test Systems Inc. is seeking an experienced Application Engineer II to join our growing team in Plymouth, Michigan. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of automotive and electrification technologies, supporting the commissioning and optimization of industry-leading test systems used by the world's top vehicle and powertrain manufacturers.

In this role, you will play a key part in delivering sophisticated testing solutions across a diverse portfolio that includes engines, powertrains, emissions systems, batteries, inverters, eMotors, and eAxles. You will have the opportunity to lead commissioning activities, collaborate directly with customers, and take ownership of complex projects from installation through final acceptance.

Travel: Approximately 40%

Location: Southeast Michigan

What You'll Do

As an Application Engineer II, you will:

• Lead commissioning and startup activities for advanced test systems at customer sites.

• Integrate and optimize mechanical, electrical, software, and controls subsystems to meet complex testing requirements.

• Diagnose and resolve challenging technical issues using a structured and analytical approach.

• Configure, validate, and troubleshoot measurement and automation systems.

• Develop and tune sophisticated control strategies and closed-loop control systems.

• Integrate auxiliary equipment and ensure seamless system operation.

• Configure safety monitoring and interlock systems to support safe and reliable operation.

• Develop commissioning procedures, technical documentation, and customer-facing reports.

• Design and implement customized test procedures to meet unique customer objectives.

• Conduct customer training and provide application support throughout the project lifecycle.

• Partner with Project Managers to manage project schedules, scope, and technical deliverables.

• Serve as a technical advisor to customers, sales teams, and project engineering groups.

• Deliver advanced technical presentations, training programs, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

• Contribute to technical research, innovation, and continuous improvement efforts across the organization.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.

• Minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience.

• Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems and their interactions.

• Experience commissioning, troubleshooting, or supporting complex test and automation systems.

• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation.

• Strong analytical and hands-on troubleshooting abilities.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong customer-facing skills with the ability to lead technical discussions and drive project completion.

• Solid understanding of Windows-based systems, PC hardware, and networking fundamentals.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Engineering or related discipline.

• Experience with automotive testing and development environments.

• Background in engine, emissions, battery, inverter, eMotor, or eAxle testing.

• Experience with test automation systems and controls integration.

• Software configuration, customization, or programming experience.

• Familiarity with data acquisition, instrumentation, and calibration systems.
