Software Developer for O*NET Occupation Study

Provide a precise, practitioner description of software developer work for a research project updating O*NET. You will report on your day-to-day responsibilities and how you design, build, and deliver software systems. This is a short, paid, one-time online survey or interview focused on the Software Developers occupation, SOC 15-1252.00.

• Participate in a one-time online survey or interview about your day-to-day work as a software developer, taking up to 30 minutes.
• Possible optional follow-up, such as a second survey, a short task, or a short interview, which would be paid separately.
• Describe work that spans the full software development lifecycle, including defining specifications and performance requirements, architecting systems, directing testing and validation, and modifying existing software to fix errors, adapt to new hardware, or improve performance.
• Explain how you analyze user needs, determine feasibility of designs within time and cost constraints, and apply principles of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis to develop software solutions.
• Detail any coordination with hardware engineers to integrate hardware and software systems, and examples where you made system design decisions rather than simply implementing others'' specifications.
• This occupation is characterized by producing software systems and applications broadly, not primarily producing websites as the main deliverable.

• Experience that demonstrates full lifecycle engagement: requirements analysis, system design, coding and deployment oversight, testing and validation direction, and maintenance or performance improvements.
• Direct knowledge of design, coding, and deployment tasks, and demonstrated ability to author or own system-level design decisions rather than only implementing others'' designs.

• Location: United States, remote.

• Minimum 4+ years of experience working specifically as a software developer.
