Description POSITION SUMMARY Perform mechanical repairs on commercial vehicles using technical expertise, diagnostic skills, and teamwork. Deliver professional, timely, and safe service to customers while maintaining a clean work area, completing accurate documentation, and following company procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Mechanical Diagnostics & Repairs Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain diesel trucks and commercial vehicles, including engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, steering, fuel, air, and DEF systems. Perform preventive maintenance services such as oil changes, brake inspections, wheel balancing, and alignments. Complete welding, fabrication, hydraulic repairs, clutch replacements, lighting repairs, and other mechanical work as needed. Complete repairs accurately and efficiently while meeting company productivity standards. Maintain a high first-time repair success rate and minimize repeat repairs. Ensure all vehicles pass operational and safety inspections before release. Test drive vehicle to gauge performance. Technical Knowledge & Problem Solving Utilize diagnostic software, engine code readers, and computer systems to identify and resolve mechanical issues. Apply mechanical knowledge, mathematical skills, and sound judgment to evaluate repair needs and determine corrective actions. Accurately diagnose vehicle failures and recommend appropriate repairs. Complete repair documentation with minimal errors. Demonstrate current knowledge of diesel engine technology and industry best practices. Customer Service & Professionalism Provide professional, courteous service while communicating repair findings, timelines, and recommendations clearly. Maintain a professional appearance and represent the company positively during shop and roadside interactions. Maintain positive customer feedback and professional interactions. Respond to customer and team inquiries promptly and respectfully. Consistently adhere to company appearance and conduct standards. Dependability & Teamwork Report to work on time and ready for duty; attend meetings, training sessions, and safety briefings as required. Collaborate effectively with coworkers, dispatch, and management to support efficient operations. Maintain acceptable attendance and punctuality standards. Roadside Service & Emergency Response Respond to roadside breakdowns and emergency service calls to diagnose and repair equipment in the field when possible. Meet company response-time expectations for service calls. Safely restore vehicles to operation or determine next repair steps. Maintain accurate field service records and repair reports. Safety & Compliance Follow all company safety procedures, DOT requirements, and shop policies. Maintain a clean, organized work area and use tools and equipment safely. Maintain a safe work environment with no preventable safety violations. Consistently comply with company, OSHA, and DOT regulations. Complete required documentation accurately and on time. COMPETENCIES Skilled diesel mechanic with expertise in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining commercial vehicles and equipment. Demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting ability, and proficiency with diagnostic software, engine codes, and repair tools. Requirements QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Possess or be eligible to apply for a DCJS certification, if required. Minimum of 2 years of diesel mechanic experience; towing or heavy-duty truck repair experience preferred. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, preferably Cummins, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, steering, fuel systems, air systems, A/C, tires, hydraulic systems, and DEF systems. Proficiency in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and electronic vehicle systems using diagnostic software and tools. Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, technical documents, schematics, and work orders. Basic computer skills with the ability to use diagnostic and fleet management systems. Welding and fabrication experience preferred. Ability to perform roadside and emergency repairs in various weather and field conditions. Must possess and maintain a complete set of tools necessary to perform assigned duties. Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical-thinking skills. Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication and teamwork. Excellent customer service and professional communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and company standards. Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain one, if required. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds and perform physical tasks including standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined spaces. Reliable attendance, punctuality, and flexibility to work overtime, weekends, on-call shifts, or emergency response assignments as needed. WORK ENVIRONMENT The Diesel Mechanic works in both shop and field environments, performing maintenance and repairs on commercial trucks, heavy-duty vehicles, and towing equipment. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and humidity. The position requires frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, diesel fuel, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, fumes, noise, vibration, and other shop-related hazards. Mechanics regularly operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, welding equipment, lifts, jacks, and other repair machinery. The role requires standing for extended periods; walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, climbing, and working in confined spaces; and lifting or moving heavy equipment and vehicle components. This position may require responding to roadside breakdowns and emergency service calls at various locations, often under time-sensitive conditions and in active traffic environments. Employees must consistently follow safety procedures, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean and organized work area.
