Safe Nurse, Emergency Department, PRN

JOB SUMMARY:  A clinically competent professional who utilizes the nursing process to direct and deliver care to the patient population on an assigned unit.

Work Experience

Education & Training:   Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Currently licensed as an RN in the State of Maryland. Currently licensed as an FNE-A. Certification in BCLS is required. Additional certification and training as determined by department per job task list. 

Work Orientation & Experience : Orientation based on experience level and determined by unit. 

Skills & Abilities: Ability to: a) convey effective verbal and written communications; b) utilize basic assessment and critical thinking skills; c) organize and manage time effectively setting appropriate priorities; d) make independent decisions consistent with current policies, procedures and nursing standards including the standards as outlined for the FNE; e) hours of availability to include on-call time to meet coverage needs including all shifts; f) effectively function as a member of a collaborative team; g) respond to sexual assault situations appropriately; h) adhere to standards of behavior and support the Culture of Excellence.

1. Performs assessments and documents according to ED policy for alleged victims or suspects that include appropriate history of situation sexual and physical trauma. 

2. Uses assessment techniques and equipment appropriate to age, size of patient, and according to reported assault.

3. Collection, preparation, and submission of forensic evidence or photography, if indicated by reported event.

4. Follows policy for Jane Doe victims regarding evidence collection, preparation, and submission without filing police report to ensure appropriate follow up instructions are provided to the victim.

5. Provides emotional support to alleged victim and family/significant other.

6. Gives explanation for procedures, prior to performing such, using communication appropriate to age and development stage of patient.

7. Maintains contact hours (8) in a related field through continuing education.

8. Attends staff meetings and Harford Sexual Assault Response Team, as requested and as available.
