Key Position Details:

• 1.0 FTE (80 hours per two-week pay period)
• 8-hour day shift
• No weekends

This position is on the inpatient Adult Mental Health Unit at United Hospital. Every patient on the inpatient mental health unit is assigned a Mental Health Social Worker during their hospital stay. The Inpatient Mental Health Social Worker works closely with a multidisciplinary treatment team including psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, psychologists, internal medicine providers, clinical therapy staff, mental health coordinators, pharmacy, and other team members as needed.

In this role, the social worker completes comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments, assists with civil commitment and court related processes, coordinates with outpatient providers, community supports, patients and families, and develops individualized discharge plans to support a successful transition back into the community.

This is a full time, Monday through Friday, day shift position with no routine weekend requirements. For those pursuing clinical licensure, full time employees receive 4 hours of clinical supervision per month, including 2 hours of individual supervision and 2 hours of group supervision.

The Mental Health Social Work team is known for its strong culture of collaboration, clinical support, and teamwork. New staff receive comprehensive onboarding tailored to their learning needs, mentorship, and ongoing support to build confidence in the role and develop expertise in inpatient mental health social work.

This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patients experiencing acute mental health needs while working alongside an experienced and dedicated interdisciplinary team. Social workers play a central role in helping patients access resources, navigate complex systems, overcome barriers to discharge, and successfully reconnect with their communities.

Very infrequent cross coverage on the inpatient geriatric mental health unit may be required based on operational needs. The position is assigned to the adult mental health population, and any geriatric coverage is limited and uncommon.

No travel or driving is required as part of this position beyond the employee's normal commute to work.

Job Description:

Provides patients and families with the psychosocial support needed to cope with chronic, acute, or terminal illnesses. Services include advising family care givers, providing patient education and counseling, and making referrals for other services. May also provide care and case management or interventions designed to promote health, prevent disease, and address barriers to access to healthcare.

Principle Responsibilities:

• Delivers professional and thorough social work services, including psychosocial assessment and intervention planning.
• Coordinates complex transition plans with patients, families, health care team and community providers.
• Advocates for patients and families by supporting patient rights and accessing protective services.
• May participate in care system process that prevent readmissions.
• May collaborate with the health care team to promote appropriate length of stay.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Social Work

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Social Work
• Experience in an acute care setting
• 2+ years social work experience

Licenses/Certifications:

• Licensed Social Worker - MN Board of Social Work required
• Valid Driver's License required upon hire - MN and WI residents must obtain a valid driver's license in their state of residence within 60 days of employment for positions in for Home Care, Palliative Care Community, Senior Health Care and System Complex Care Management

Pay Range:

$31.07 to $49.76 per hour. The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
