Director of R&D, Artificial Intelligence

Thermo Fisher Scientific seeks a Director of R&D AI Strategy and Transformation to lead artificial intelligence adoption across its research and development organization. The role involves developing enterprise AI strategy, designing agentic AI solutions, establishing governance frameworks, and driving cross-functional alignment within a complex global matrix.
Responsibilities
- Develop and advance enterprise R&D AI roadmap aligned with scientific and business objectives
- Design and lead prototyping of agentic AI solutions for the Chief Scientific Office
- Establish R&D AI governance framework covering prioritization, access, compliance, and oversight
- Partner with scientific, technology, legal, and business teams to identify and prioritize AI opportunities
- Evaluate AI platforms, foundation models, vendors, and external collaborators for strategic fit
Requirements
- Strategic and technical fluency in artificial intelligence and machine learning systems
- Experience leading enterprise digital transformation or AI adoption initiatives
- Demonstrated ability to influence across complex organizational matrices and functions
- Knowledge of R&D workflows, scientific computing, and life sciences industry context
- Expertise in AI governance, data management, intellectual property, and responsible AI practices
- Hands-on capability in AI solution design, prototyping, and agentic systems architecture
