Job Summary The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the administrative, fiscal, and technical operations of the clinical laboratory to ensure efficient workflow, regulatory compliance, and high-quality patient care. This role involves planning, organizing, and evaluating laboratory functions while managing personnel, budgets, and resources. The Manager serves as a technical supervisor for on-site and off-site clinical laboratory functions, ensuring adherence to corporate policies and regulatory standards.

Essential Functions

• Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the work of the clinical laboratory, ensuring coordination with other hospital departments to support efficient operations and quality patient care.
• Hires, trains, evaluates, and develops laboratory personnel while ensuring staff competencies are assessed on an ongoing basis.
• Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, including CAP, CLIA, JCAHO, and other relevant standards, maintaining proper documentation and readiness for inspections.
• Establishes, reviews, and updates department policies, procedures, and job descriptions to align with organizational and regulatory requirements.
• Manages the department budget, demonstrating fiscal accountability and achieving outcomes within allocated resources.
• Collaborates with other hospital departments to resolve issues that impact patient care delivery or organizational objectives.
• Delegates tasks appropriately while maintaining accountability for departmental operations and outcomes.
• Actively engages in quality assurance and safety initiatives within the department, addressing issues promptly to maintain high standards.
• Utilizes hospital-wide and department-specific computer software and technology to streamline laboratory processes and improve efficiency.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
• Complies with all policies and standards.

Leadership Responsibilities

• Supervision and Staff Management
  • Provides leadership, mentorship and professional development opportunities for departmental staff.
  • Schedules employees to ensure effective use of resources. Consults with Director on staffing issues.
  • Conducts performance evaluations, sets goals and provides feedback to staff on their performance and development.
• Strategic Planning and Financial Oversight
  • Develops and manages departmental budget ensuring cost effective operations while maintaining high quality service.
  • Monitors expenditures, ensuring cost-effective delivery of services.
  • Evaluates and implements new technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures and protocols to optimize quality and overall efficiencies.
• Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies. May oversee the accreditation process with relevant agencies ensuring that services meet or exceed industry standards.
  • Participates in audits, inspections and accreditation processes as applicable.
  • Follows established quality control practices to ensure accuracy, consistency and safety.
• Collaboration and Communication
  • Works closely with leadership teams to coordinate and improve service delivery.
  • Stays up-to-date with industry advancements, new technologies, and regulatory changes.
• Staff Responsibilities
  • May work in a staff role, when required. Ensures that duties and responsibilities are fulfilled while meeting all competencies established for that job.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related laboratory science required
• Master's Degree preferred
• 2-4 years of experience in closely related field required
• 2-4 years of previous leadership experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• Certified Medical Lab Scientist-ASCP as applicable by state required or
• CLS-L - Clinical Lab Scientist License as applicable by state required or
• ASCP - Medical Technologist required
