This role's responsibility is to lead, integrate and communicate. This role oversees sustainability efforts across all locations within a specific region, ensuring that sustainability practices follow regional regulations and corporate goals. The RSM collaborates with regional project teams to educate on sustainability-related project responsibilities and assists with sustainable building strategies, systems, and standards. The role focuses on carbon reduction, material selection, waste management, water management, jobsite wellness, and managing data collection in alignment with corporate strategies and standards and helps develop sustainability budgets and fees related to sustainability consultants. This role can be located in either Southern or Northern California.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop Regional Strategies. Design and execute sustainability plans, customized to the regions's needs and regulations.
- Present new and relevant sustainability information at regional leadership meetings.
- Attend meetings of the Corporate Responsibility Plan committee.
- Join national sustainability groups and to to regional conferences.
- Participate and present at regional sustainability conferences.
- As needed, assist the Corporate Director of Design and Sustainability and the Corporate Sustainability Manager
- Monitoring and Reporting: Supervise the gathering and analyze sustainability data from multiple locations and prepare detailed reports for regional and corporate management.
- Assist teams in compiling construction-related rating system points, data and submissions in Green Badger
- Before Construction begins, confirm that A5 carbon tracking processes have been implemented.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all regional operations follow state, local, and national environmental laws.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Work with regional stakeholders, including local governments, community organizations, and business partners, to promote and adopt sustainable practices.
- Project Management: Lead regional sustainability initiatives, participate in project meetings, take notes, and advise teams on carbon emissions, embodied carbon, rating system scorecard review, and rating system certification.
- Enroll projects in the embodied carbon benchmarking tool during preconstruction.
- Review contracts and specifications related to project sustainability requirements and assess risks to the project or Hensel Phelps.
- Support teams in gathering construction-related rating system points, data, and submissions for the rating system authority.
- Schedule regular check-ins, including site visits, with project teams to confirm sustainability objectives are being achieved.
- Represent Hensel Phelps when engaging with client representatives on sustainability topics.
- Risk Management: Identify, control, and reduce design risks related to sustainability.
- Cost Management: Manage the design related to sustainability to ensure it stays within or under the project budget.
- Process Optimization: Define process and workflow requirements. Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency.
- Business Development: Assist with regional business growth and project pursuits as needed.
- Support the creation of marketing materials for sustainability.
- Review the sustainability requirements in the RFPs.
- Develop and evaluate sustainability content in project proposals.
- Training and Education: Create and implement training programs to teach regional employees about sustainability practices and their significance.
- Train teams on tracking LEED construction points in Green Badger.
- Train project teams on how to utilize embodied carbon benchmarking tools.
- Support teams in training and implementing procedures for emissions reduction and building certifications to help projects achieve their goals.
Qualifications:
- Proven track record in developing and implementing regional sustainability programs, with significant experience in sustainability roles.
- Over eight years of experience in sustainability consulting, construction, architecture, and engineering.
- Experience with LEED and other comparable rating systems, including Envision.
- Experience with carbon reporting platforms like CDP, SASB, and others and/or a combination of education and experience.
- Strong leadership, project management, and communication abilities.
- Capable of analyzing data and developing actionable insights.
- Knowledge of regional sustainability best practices and trends.
- General understanding of benchmarking applied in carbon emissions monitoring and construction procedures.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and work independently.
- Showed a strong commitment to sustainability in the built environment.
- Understands and can communicate estimates to project participants.
- Some experience with purchasing and estimating is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Light Work. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The individual in this position will periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type. The frequency of each action varies by workflow and office activity. Walking - The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, phone, computer, and computer printer. The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office administration. Constantly computes, analyzes, and conceptualizes mathematical calculations and formulas. Constantly reads written communications and views email submissions. The person in this position regularly sits in a stationary position in front of a computer screen. Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate. Rarely exposed to high and low temperatures.
Education:
A bachelor's degree in environmental science, architecture, engineering, or a related field is preferred. Advanced degrees or certifications in sustainability or corporate responsibility are highly regarded.
Certifications:
Professional certifications, such as the Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP) or LEED accreditation (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), are required.

Hensel Phelps provides generous benefits for our salaried employees. This position is eligible for company paid medical insurance, life insurance, accidental death & dismemberment, long-term disability, 401(K) retirement plan, health savings account (HSA) (HSA not available in Hawaii), and our employee assistance program (EAP). It also is eligible for employee paid enrollment in vision and dental insurance. Hensel Phelps also believes in the importance of taking time to recharge. As a result, salaried employees are eligible for paid time off beginning upon hire. Salaried positions (project engineers and above) participate in an annual bonus plan, subject to company and employee performance. Salaried employees are also eligible for a company cell phone or cell phone allowance in accordance with company policy. Further, salaried employees also receive either a vehicle or vehicle allowance in accordance with Hensel Phelps' policies. Based on position location, a cost of living adjustment (COLA) may also be included (subject to periodic review and adjustment).
Salary: Northern California Region. Base: $78,200- $122,300 COLA: Cost of Living Adjustment: $36,600 Total Compensation: $114,800 - $158,900
