Duties & Responsibilities

Pursue the clinical, research, and education missions of the VCU’sacademic medical center in the specialties of Hematology, Oncology,and Palliative Care. Through bench research, clinical trials, andthe rigorous study of prevention control, our scientists pursue themany roles of medicine in treating, preventing, and managing theadverse events of cancer through the continuum of care. Ourhallmark activity is translational research, where our physiciansand scientists work to bring laboratory discoveries to the patientas quickly and safely as possible. Through our training programs,our faculty train the next generation of physicians and scientiststo further advance practice and science.

Chief Purpose of this Position

The VCU School of Medicine Division of Hematology, Oncology andPalliative Care and Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center are seekinga Clinical & Translational Investigator with a focus inHematologic Malignancies to practice at our flagship and satellitelocations.

This position will be responsible for bringing the most innovativeclinical trials in Hematologic Malignancies to the MasseyComprehensive Cancer Center and the VCU region utilizing intra andextramural partnerships. Ability to collaborate with Basic ScienceInvestigators will be key in developing a translational researchprogram. This position will be expected to establish extramuralpartnerships and pursue the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center’sgoal of offering our patients early access to the most innovativedrugs in hematologic malignancies before they become the futurestandard of care.

Teaching

Trains medical students, residents and fellows in the lab and whilein the clinic. Expected to actively participate in providingclinical research opportunities to fellows.

Research

This position will be responsible for bringing the most innovativeclinical trials in hematologic malignancies to the MasseyComprehensive Cancer Center and the region utilizing intra andextramural partnerships. This position will be expected toestablish extramural partnerships with the ultimate goal ofoffering the most innovative drugs in hematologic malignancies topatients at the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center before they arestandard of care. This position will be expected to develop,initiate, and manage investigator-initiated trials in collaborationwith the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center’s laboratoryinvestigators. You will be expected to participate in Massey’sClinical Trial Training Program, write 2 IITs by year 3 and year 4,and apply for a career development award by year 4. Efforts toobtain funding for your research in areas of focus consistent withthe mission of the School of Medicine, Department, and MasseyComprehensive Cancer Center must be demonstrated. In addition,reasonable scholarly activities, such as publications,presentations at national meetings and participation in appropriateacademic organizations, are expected as well as activeparticipation as a scientific member of the Massey ComprehensiveCancer Center

Service

It is expected that the person in this position will be active indecreasing Health Disparities in the community served byMassey/VCU

Clinical

Attends on the inpatient wards and consult service, and/or seespatients in the outpatient clinic with a focus on hematologicmalignancies.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Board certified or eligible in medical oncology orhematology
• Eligible for Virginia licensure
• Evidence of accomplishment/potential (e.g. – publications,trial PI) during medical school, residency, fellowship, and/orearly academic career
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty,staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or acommitment to do so as a faculty at VCU

Salary Range: Commensurate
