THE POSITION: Paralegals work in one of our County legal departments. They require a paraprofessional understanding of the law and legal procedures. Paralegals are responsible for supporting attorneys by conducting legal research, retrieving, analyzing, and signing legal documents like briefs, subpoenas, pleadings, appeals, motions, contracts, deeds, and drafts of legal opinions for the attorneys preparing for court cases. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill full-time, part-time, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur throughout the County. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Six (6) months of full-time work experience in preparing and processing legal documents that demonstrates possession of and competency in the requisite knowledge and abilities. One of the following Education/Certificates: A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association (a copy of your certificate must be submitted by the final filing deadline - see document submittal requirements). OR A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. (a copy of your certificate or degree/unofficial or official transcripts must be submitted by the final filing deadline - see document submittal requirements). OR A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject and a minimum of one year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks. (a copy of your degree/ unofficial or official transcripts must be submitted by the final filing deadline - see document submittal requirements). DOCUMENT SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS: All candidates must either submit a copy of their certificate or college diploma or official/unofficial transcripts verifying the courses and units completed, institution, student name, date, degree and area of specialization conferred by the final filing date of the recruitment. Candidates who fail to submit their degree/transcripts by the deadline may be disqualified from the recruitment. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: Candidates who attended a college or university that is accredited by a foreign or non-U.S. accrediting agency must have their educational units evaluated by an educational evaluation service. The result must be submitted to the Human Resources Department no later than the close of the recruitment. Please contact the local college or university to learn where this service can be obtained. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Incumbents assigned to the Paralegal classes are required to meet mandatory continuing education requirements pursuant to California Law, Business and Professions Code, Section 6450 (d). Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license may be required. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Independent travel will be required. Some positions in this class may require bilingual skills. SELECTION PROCESS: 08/07/26– 5:00pm (PST) – Deadline to submit application and required documents. Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be used to assess an applicant’s ability to advance in the process; as such, responses to supplemental questions should be treated as test examination responses.
