Position Summary Assist the Party Chief and perform duties as directed by making exact measurements and providing a quality layout for unit installation. Provide data regarding the shape, contour, gravitation, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features on or near the earth’s surface for engineering, construction, and other purposes. Principal Duties & Accountabilities Holds level or stadia rod at designated points to assist in determining elevations and laying out stakes for mapmaking, construction, land, and other surveys. Places stakes at designated points and drives them into ground at specified elevation. Cuts and clears brush, trees, or other obstructions from the line of survey. Measur­es distance between survey points with steel or cloth tape or surveyor’s chain. Marks measuring points with markers, paint sticks, tacks, scratches, or stakes. Loads/unloads equipment and prepares for daily jobs. Helps calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain or current installations. Determines longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite‑based GPS. Records survey results, including shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features. Adjusts surveying instruments to maintain accuracy. Participates in all safety‑related processes and programs, ensuring zero injuries. Reports all accidents and near misses and participates in investigations as needed. Participates in pre‑job work planning and safety discussions, identifies hazards, and takes corrective action. Responds to safety hazards and warning devices and follows lockout/tag‑out procedures. Maintains a safe and clean work environment following established safety rules. Uses effective verbal and written communication; quickly performs arithmetic operations. Listens to coworkers, takes full attention, asks questions, and provides feedback. Coordinates work with other crafts and co‑workers on the job. Participates in on‑the‑job training and mentoring opportunities. Produces quality work that meets plans, specifications and industry standards. Reads and understands plans and specifications; visualizes drawings in three dimensions. Assists in planning, installing, and/or repairing systems as assigned. Requirements Job Qualification At least one year of experience in industrial construction with layout or survey responsibilities. Knowledge of layout and survey work using mathematics—adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with distance units. General understanding of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry to verify calculations. Ability to gather physical survey data, document technical design details, analyze geographic data, calibrate equipment, and determine geographic positions. Ability to understand and follow written and verbal directions. Minimum age 18 years. Must successfully complete pre‑employment onboarding: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle record search. Preferred Job Qualifications NCCER Construction Craft Laborer NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program Training certificates NCCER Construction Craft Laborer (listed twice in original; combined here) NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program (listed twice in original; combined here) Work Conditions Lift and carry heavy items up to 50 pounds. Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in and around confined or cluttered places, and uneven areas. Maintain full range of motion and flexibility. Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls according to procedure. Perform repetitive movements. Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds. Work up to a 12‑hour shift performing hard labor in varying temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions. Work Environment Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
