The San Diego State University Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in advanced processing of powder materials with a specific focus on sintering science and technology. The position begins in Fall 2027 and preferred areas of expertise include advanced and additive manufacturing of powder materials processingstructurepropertyperformance relationships powder based fabrication methods scalable manufacturing of powder material systems and artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to materials design process optimization and modeling of powder processing and sintering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University an R1 research university serving more than 40000 students offers an EAC/ABET accredited B.S. degree an M.S. degree and a joint Ph.D. program with the University of California San Diego with research strengths in manufacturing materials design energy mechatronics robotics and control and bioengineering. The successful candidate will work in the departments Powder Technology Laboratory and is expected to establish a vigorous externally funded research program that builds on existing strengths and develops collaborations across the department the College of Engineering and regional industry partners. Qualifications

Required qualifications by date of application

• A record of original research / scholarly / creative accomplishments and demonstrated capacity to a) develop a vigorous and independent program of research / scholarship / creative activity b) teach graduate and undergraduate courses; and c) engage in both campus and professional service activities.
• Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two (2) or more of the Building on Inclusive Excellence criteria.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries.

Required qualifications by date of hire

• Terminal degree in Mechanical Engineering Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related discipline with all degree requirements met.

Preferred qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise in sintering science and technology and in the processing of powder materials
• Experience in advanced manufacturing or additive manufacturing of powder materials including processingstructurepropertyperformance relationships and scalable fabrication methods
• Experience applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to materials engineering such as data driven materials design process optimization or modeling of powder processing and sintering
• Record of publications presentations and/or funding
• Potential for securing extramural funding
• Experience collaborating with industry partners
• University level teaching experience in materials science manufacturing or related areas of mechanical engineering including teaching students from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to direct advanced undergraduate and graduate student research

The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is from $00.
