EXCITING OPPORTUNITY! The City of Superior is in need of an experienced full time Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the Public Works Dept. - Central Equipment Division.
Driver License/Endorsement Requirement: Must acquire, possess and maintain valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of hire date. The City can assist with this process, including the new Entry Level Driver Training requirements.
Starting Wage Range: $28.36 - $35.45 depending on related qualifications and experience of candidate.
After three years as a Mechanic, there is an opportunity to test into a higher Certified Mechanic position. Work Location: City Garage 2301 Hill Avenue, Superior, WI 54880
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm and as needed otherwise (40 hours/week).

DEFINITION:
Under supervision, performs skilled automotive and welding on automobiles, buses, emergency vehicles and construction equipment. Performs other related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
An employee in this class is responsible for the accurate and efficient repair of automobiles, buses, police and emergency vehicles and a variety of construction and maintenance equipment. Additionally, employees may be assigned to perform general welding repair to vehicles and equipment. The employee in this class must exercise good technical judgment in selecting the proper techniques, methods and materials to be employed for each job. Assignments and instructions are received orally or in the form of written orders as to repairs needed on a vehicle or piece of equipment. Work is generally inspected by the Fleet Manager or Working Foreman while in progress or upon completion. This level is distinguished from the next higher level of Master Mechanic by the educational and experience requirements established.
Employment Standards TYPICAL TASKS:
1. Repairs and replaces electrical systems such as wires, starters, alternators, regulators and generators.
2. Performs preventive maintenance service on light, medium and heavy equipment.
3. Adjusts carburetors, replaces hoses and belts.
4. Repairs hydraulic equipment, tightens and/or replaces packings, seals, pumps and hyd cylinders.
5. Tunes cars, trucks, and emergency vehicles, diagnose and troubleshoot on electronic control and ignition systems and electronic diesel fuel systems, replaces components.
6. Checks and repairs drive train, universal joints, and tie rods.
7. Winterizes vehicles and equipment.
8. Overhauls engines and equipment.
9. Makes service calls when machinery breaks down while in service.
10. Maintains saws, generators, pumps, small engines, attachments and snow blowers.
11. Repairs and replaces springs, shock absorbers, kingpins and other suspension mechanism.
12. Replaces, repairs and adjusts brakes, clutches, transmissions and differentials.
13. Performs road tests to check repairs.
14. Mounts, balances and repairs tires on light, medium and heavy equipment.
15. Performs preventive maintenance service and repairs to Landfill equipment.
16. Performs related work as required.
Knowledges: Thorough knowledge of:
REQUIREMENTS: Training and experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be: Graduation from technical school training in automotive mechanic or welding repair; AND one year of experience in repairing automotive vehicles.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: Previous experience working as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Driver License Requirement: Must acquire, possess and maintain valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within one year probationary period. Residency Requirement: No residency requirement. Post Job Offer Medical Examination Requirement: Must pass medical examination for the occupational grouping including lifting capacity test of 100 pounds and DOT drug testing prior to hire. Family: $368.32 (2 deductions of $184.16) The City has a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). The 2026 annual deductibles are: $3,400 for Single coverage & $6,800 for Employee+1 or Family coverage. The City will contribute $1,700/$3,400 of that annual deductible into your Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2026, which will carry over if not used and is always yours to use until spent. There is no proration on the deductible or the City's contribution.
2) WI Retirement System (WRS) - The WRS is among the best funded and best managed public pension systems in the country!: You will be required to make contributions to your WRS benefit at 7.20% (in 2026) of your gross wages. The City will contribute the balance of this benefit, 7.20% in 2026 (14.4% going into your retirement!). 3) Life Insurance: To be effective the first of the month following 30 days from the date of hire. Basic coverage (= 1 x annual salary) paid by City (must enroll to receive), ability to purchase four additional units of coverage (= 4 x annual salary) plus spouse/dependent coverage.
4) Paid Time Off:
Sick Leave: For newly hired employees, will accumulate one sick leave day/month and is available immediately as accrued. 5) Vacation: For newly hired employees, seven days of vacation will be prorated from date of hire for use immediately. 6) Paid Parental Leave: Up to six weeks of paid parental leave is available to employees to use following the birth or adoption of an employee's child, or placement of a foster child. 7) Holidays: Eleven holidays off with pay each calendar year plus three floating holidays. 8) Longevity pay when eligible as follows:
After five (5) years of service, employees will receive $.20 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After ten (10) years of service, employees will receive $.30 per hour in addition to their base salary;

- Standard methods, materials, tools and equipment of the automotive and equipment mechanic trade;
- Principles of operating gasoline and diesel driven equipment;
- Tools, materials, methods and practices of welding, cutting and fabrication;
- Occupational hazards and the safety precautions for performing mechanic tasks;
- Repairing damaged surfaces of vehicles and equipment;
- Performing electrical arc and gas welding, and repair welding and cutting of ferrous and non-
- ferrous metals as required;
- Assembling, installing and designing and fabricating additional equipment on vehicles that must
- be welded;
- Cutting and welding steel and heats and forms metal to repair machinery tools and mobile and stationary equipment.
- Use automotive testing equipment;
- Keep current with modern vehicle technology including Electric Vehicles and diagnostic software scan tool usage;
- Work from blueprints and service manuals, layout schematics;
- Maintain records, gather information and complete reports;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
