Job Description

• Supports service measurement, improvement, and goaling activities through advanced exploratory data analysis and statistics. Includes quantification of current, historical, or future “what if” scenarios using detailed scan data, which necessitates frequent and iterative use of Spark and big data processing instead of traditional SQL.

• Provides tradeoff quantifications between service, cost, revenue, and customer experience for different scenarios through exploratory data analysis and mathematical reasoning. Requires critical thinking about orders of magnitude and asymptotic behavior of trends.

• Develops fact bases to help build strategic narratives of opportunity areas through self-directed exploration of scan and service data.

• Explores enhancements to service measurement and improvement activities through development and calculation of new metrics and the application of statistical process control (SPC).

• Designs and implements reporting dashboards and other visualizations that track and visually communicate key business metrics and provide actionable insights

• Participates in design sessions to implement experiments to answer targeted questions and solves known issues by actively engaging with business partners to understand key business challenges.

• Independently works on analyzing and interpreting data to identify trends, insights, and logical data driven solutions for business problems.

• Analyzes data from various databases to drive optimization and improvement of product development and business strategies.

• Ensures accuracy and quality of data, including reconciliation from disparate sources.

• Performs other duties as assigned

Sr Data Scientist

Job Profile Summary: Provides expertise and leadership at the enterprise level related to vast quantities of data (including disparate data), enterprise analytics, statistical modeling and initiatives. Leads staff in descriptive, predictive, prescriptive and ensemble modeling, advanced statistical techniques, use of database tools and/or other approaches in quantitative analysis of complex business situations.

Essential Functions

• Creates and executes solutions form initial concept to fully tested production and communicates results to a broad range of audiences.

• Advanced use of current and emerging technologies to evaluate trends and develop actionable insights and recommendations to management, via understanding of the business model and the information available for analysis.

• Uses data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and high complexity predictive modeling and fact-based management to drive decision making.

• Mentors less senior staff. Leads cross functional teams. Routinely work on multiple highly complex assignments.

• Provides consultation to senior leadership on a normal basis.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree in data science, computer science, applied mathematics, data analytics, statistics or related quantitative field. Related experience may offset degree requirements and related education/degree may offset experience requirements.

Minimum Experience
Five years' work experience in measurement and analysis, quantitative business problem solving, operations analysis, marketing analysis, simulation and/or predictive analytics.

Data Scientist Advisor

Job Profile Summary: Provides expert leadership at the enterprise level related to vast quantities of data (including disparate data), enterprise analytics, statistical modeling, and initiatives and works on the leading edge of technology, tools, and methodology to ensure that FedEx is a leader in Business Intelligence. Leads lower level Data Scientists in descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive and ensemble modeling, advanced statistical techniques, use of database tools and/or other approaches in quantitative analysis of complex business situations. Creates and implements solutions from initial concept to fully tested production and communicates results to a broad range of audiences. Expert in the use of all data types, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and high- complexity predictive modeling and fact-based management to drive decision making. Leads cross functional projects and programs. Routinely works on multiple highly complex assignments concurrently.

Essential Functions

• Performs both qualitative analysis (e.g., content analysis, phenomenology, hypothesis testing, network analysis, sentiment analysis, and classification) and quantitative analysis (e.g., clustering regression, pattern recognition, descriptive and inferential statistics) on large data sets to understand trends and relationships between variables to gain predictive insights and drive business results.

• Designs and implements experiments to answer targeted questions, solve known issues and suggest/influence the direction of the business by effectively communicating with business partners and functional leaders to understand and prioritize key business challenges.

• Guides others in the collection of new data, refinement strategy, researches, tests, recommends, and implements improvements in the tools and techniques used by FedEx to manage and access data and information.

• Prioritizes problems so that the team works on the most valuable cases; leads investigations into multiple streams of data to solve complex business problems.

• Designs and implements reporting dashboards that track and visually communicate key business metrics and provide actionable insights.

• Identifies internal and external information sources, builds strong working relationships with subject matter experts and leadership within FedEx and the external marketplace.

• Act as primary author of whitepapers and will present various industry topics as it relates to Data Science at conferences.

• Collaborates with IT departments and communicates changes in industry trends and techniques to ensure the team is current with tools, knowledge and methods.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline required. A Master’s degree in a related field may off set two years of the required experience. Related experience may offset degree requirements and related education/degree may offset experience requirements.

Minimum Experience

Seven (7) years experience required in solving analytics problems through the application of data science techniques or work experience in measurement and analysis, quantitative business problem solving, solutions implementation, operations analysis, marketing analysis, simulation development and/or predictive analytics.

Experience should include using most of the following:

• Machine Learning Frameworks: SKLearn, XGBoost, TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLlib, and other core ML frameworks.

• Programming Languages: Python, Scala, R, C++, Java, and other modern languages.

• Data Tools and Frameworks: MLFlow, Databricks, Spark, Kafka, Hive, Hadoop, and others.

• Cloud Environments: Azure, AWS, etc.

• SQL (Structured Query Language).

• ETL (Extract-Transform-Load) concepts, query performance tuning and testing.

• Visualization tools such as Tableau, Spotfire, and Power BI.

Work Locations

The desired location for this position would be Memphis, TN however, this position may be located anywhere within the United States excluding Alaska, Hawaii, and US territories. Depending on your location, you may be required to work at a FedEx Campus several times per week.
