Pharmacy Technician Trainee

UC Health is hiring a Pharmacy Technician Trainee for Outpatient Pharmacy at the University of Cincinnati's Medical Center. Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technician trainees work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed by only a registered pharmacist.

Responsibilities include contributing to the effective operation of the department by picking up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds. Answering the telephone and answering requests at the window/door to make stat deliveries to patient care and ancillary areas when requested. Communicating clearly when providing instructions to patients/families regarding treatment. Involving family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient. Accepting new written, faxed, or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescriber's agent. Participating in the quality improvement activities of the department by completing and documenting all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly; identifying and replacing outdated and unusable medications; collecting data, conducting quality monitors, and completing documentation as assigned. Preparing and affixing medication labels; counting and pouring dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist and preparing non-sterile compounds. Preparing intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques while under supervision.

Education: High school diploma is the minimum required. College courses are desirable but not required.

License and Certification: Current pharmacy technician registration by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. Must obtain a certified technician certificate within one year of hire. All technicians must maintain registration and certification throughout their employment with the UC Health Pharmacy Department.

Experience: No experience required. One to two years equivalent experience preferred.

Required Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods; work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff; handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; set priorities and solve problems; respond quickly to emergency requests; communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and assist in meeting the pharmaceutical care needs of the patient populations served by the organization.

Expected starting salary range for this position is between $16.15/hr.- $19.76/hr. The actual pay rate for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant's years of experience, unique skills and abilities, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and other requirements for the position.
