Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Environmental Branch Chief (Senior Environmental Scientist, Supervisory), the incumbent is an interdisciplinary team member who must establish and maintain a professional working relationship with internal project delivery partners, various regulatory agencies, local partners and interested parties involved with Caltrans' projects. This position may require site visits, including travel to remote areas. Incumbents may be assigned lead responsibility for a specific project, program function, or area of expertise. Addiitonally, incumbent may mentor to lower level staff; and serves as consultants to other technical staff, management, and other agencies in those matters.

Working Conditions

Position located at 2885 S. Higuera St., San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County. 

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

While at the base of operation, the incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting in a office. Frequent travel and field work are required within the Region. Some fieldwork requires the ability to work in a variety of climatic and geographical conditions. The incumbent may be required to travel to offices and field locations, as well as occasional travel outside of the area .

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.

The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) serves as documentation of each applicant's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. • Describe your knowledge and experience leading the preparation and review of complex CEQA/NEPA environmental documents for transportation projects.

• Describe your proficiency in applying environmental regulations, integrating technical studies, and ensuring environmental commitments are incorporated into project design and construction.

• Describe your experience managing multiple high-priority projects, tracking deadlines, and overseeing consultant or staff workflows.

• Describe your experience conveying technical information clearly in writing and verbally while coordinating with regulatory agencies, partner agencies, and the public.
