Job Title: Laboratory Assistant-Certified Profession: Medical Laboratory Specialty: Clinical Laboratory Assistant Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Varied shifts Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: 1 year preferred License: None specified Certifications: CPT-1 or CPT-2 required, American Heart Association BLS certification required Must-Have: High school diploma required Description: The Laboratory Assistant-Certified is responsible for assisting the Laboratory Scientist in the operation of the Clinical Laboratory. The Laboratory Assistant will perform phlebotomy procedures. Under the supervision of a Laboratory Scientist, the Laboratory Assistant will perform certain non-technical aspects of patient testing including specimen processing and laboratory informatics activities. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for maintaining a well-stocked, clean, and orderly laboratory environment. This contributes to the smooth operation of the laboratory and ensures safe, quality patient care. The Laboratory Assistant will perform all aspects of venipuncture including heel-stick and finger-stick. Utilization of proper aseptic technique is required when performing patient care procedures. The assistant will choose the specimen of choice through knowledge, request, or research for particular test requests. Appropriate handling of all aspects of specimen collection, labeling, and processing is essential. The Laboratory Assistant will perform correct procedures for all laboratory paperwork including patient requisitions. This includes reference laboratory requisitions, documentation of special circumstances, review of billing demographics, daily check-off lists, and temperature monitoring. Preparing monthly records and annual reports is also part of the job responsibilities. Key characteristics for this position include excellent communication skills, being thorough and detail-oriented, and strong time management skills.
