Job description NYLAG is seeking a highly motivated Supervising Financial Counselor who is passionate about expanding access to financial empowerment services and advancing economic justice and financial stability for New Yorkers. NYLAG's Financial Empowerment and Advocacy Unit (FEAU) was established in 2009 to help individuals and families build financial stability, overcome economic barriers, and achieve their financial goals. FEAU provides free, high-quality counseling, literacy and advocacy services to low-income New Yorkers through NYLAG’s offices, community-based sites across New York City, Long Island and Westchester. Using a client-centered and trauma-informed approach, FEAU works to strengthen financial literacy, increase access to economic opportunities and resources, and promote long-term financial well‑being in the communities we serve. The Supervising Financial counselor will work alongside the unit leadership team to oversee program operations including staff supervision and project management for initiatives in their portfolio. As a part of their role, they will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to support our work with communities, track performance metrics and assist with reporting, and lead strategic initiatives in response to community and unit need. The Supervising Financial counselor will also provide financial counseling and coaching as needed. Duties and Responsibilities Train, mentor, and supervise a team of financial counselors. Serve as project manager for a portfolio of 4-6 financial empowerment initiatives, ensuring effective implementation, coordination, and achievement of program goals. Lead communications and project management activities with project partners and stakeholders to meet performance goals; oversee reporting requirements, including data collection, narrative reporting, and performance tracking; and monitor deliverables and outcomes to ensure timely attainment of project goals and contractual obligations. Build and maintain collaborative relationships with partner sites and key stakeholders to strengthen program implementation and advance financial empowerment outcomes. In partnership with the Director, support staff in identifying professional development goals, creating growth opportunities, and strengthening skills through coaching, mentorship, and training. Provide one‑on‑one financial counseling and coaching services to clients, supporting financial stability, asset building, and consumer protection goals. Collaborate with internal and external partners to identify emerging client and community needs, strengthen service delivery, advocate for resources and opportunities that support clients and staff, and advance the unit’s racial equity goals. Collaborate with fellow supervisors and leadership to support unit‑wide initiatives, provide operational coverage, and respond to emerging programmatic and organizational needs. Qualifications NYLAG seeks a highly motivated and organized financial counselor with either (i) a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four (4) years of full‑time work experience, with preferred background in finance, financial education, counseling/coaching, or social service delivery; or (ii) six (6) to ten (10) years of full‑time work experience in financial education, counseling/coaching, or social or youth service delivery and an additional year of supervisory or management experience. A Counselor with an accreditation or designation and/or relevant graduate school education is preferred. The successful candidate will possess excellent writing, speaking, communication, and organizational skills; experience with reporting, project management, and analysis; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to advancing financial literacy and economic justice, have experience working with individuals experiencing crisis, and be able to manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment. A commitment to ongoing learning and growth, for themselves and for the members of their team is essential, including staying abreast of developments in the field and the political dynamics that affect our clients and communities. Due to current program needs, preference will be given to applicants who are bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish proficiently. Preference will be given to applicants who have taken the Personal and Consumer Finance course endorsed by the Office of Financial Empowerment. Employment type Full‑time Professional Level Managerial Salary Range NYLAG is a unionized workplace, and salaries are set pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement. Salary range for this position is between $73,718 - $79,857.
