Summary:
Serves as an advanced front-line production leader with increased responsibility for production planning, cross-shift coordination, resource balancing, and independent problem solving under the direction of the Plant Manager. Develops and adjusts daily and weekly production plans for assigned operations based on customer priorities, market rate of demand, staffing, materials, inventory requirements, and equipment capacity. Coordinates execution across shifts and support functions, resolves routine scheduling and operating constraints within delegated authority, and escalates decisions affecting customer commitments, overtime, staffing levels, or capacity. Provides leadership to hourly production employees and supports the development of less-experienced supervisors while ensuring safe, efficient production that meets quality, delivery, and cost expectations.
Core Responsibilities:
Profitably operate the production process within all applicable legal, safety, and environmental requirements. Communicate and implement procedures regarding safety compliance, hazard elimination, and accident prevention. Lead the response to shift-level safety concerns and ensure appropriate escalation and follow-through.
Develop daily production plans for assigned operations using customer and order priorities, market rate of demand, inventory needs, staffing, material availability, and equipment capacity. Establish production sequence and output targets, coordinate requirements across shifts and support functions, and adjust plans within approved priorities and staffing limits. Resolve routine production and scheduling conflicts independently. Escalate changes affecting customer commitments, overtime authorization, staffing levels, or significant capacity constraints to the Plant Manager with a recommended course of action.
Monitor and analyze production performance using Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) metrics. Identify trends and performance gaps, determine appropriate countermeasures, assign follow-up actions, and lead corrective action and continuous improvement efforts. Verify that actions are completed and produce the intended result.
Provide cross-shift coordination by communicating production status, schedule changes, downtime, quality concerns, staffing issues, material constraints, safety concerns, and recovery plans. Partner with engineering, maintenance, quality, materials, and other support functions to resolve issues and maintain continuity of operations.
Provide consistent leadership for hourly employees by setting expectations, coaching performance, recognizing strong results, addressing conduct or performance concerns, and administering corrective action in accordance with company policies and procedures. Complete performance reviews and establish meaningful development goals for direct reports. Support the development of Production Supervisor I employees by modeling effective planning, escalation, problem solving, shift communication, and people-leadership practices. Participate in selecting and onboarding talent and promote employee engagement, accountability, and goal alignment.
Competencies:
Planning and Organizing: Translate customer demand and operating priorities into achievable daily and weekly production plans. Anticipate staffing, material, inventory, and equipment constraints; evaluate tradeoffs; and adjust priorities within delegated authority.
Decision Making: Evaluate operating information, identify risks and alternatives, make timely decisions within delegated authority, and provide clear recommendations when escalation is required.
Problem Solving: Use production data and structured root-cause analysis to resolve recurring safety, quality, delivery, cost, equipment, and process issues. Establish countermeasures and verify effectiveness.
Gaining Commitment: Use appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of plans, priorities, and corrective actions across shifts and supporting functions.
Building Trust: Interact with others in a manner that builds confidence in personal judgment, follow-through, and organizational intent.
Developing Others: Provide coaching, feedback, and development assignments that strengthen employee capability and prepare others for increased responsibility.
Work Standards: Set high standards of performance for self and others and maintain accountability for the successful completion of assignments, actions, and operating commitments.
Job Requirements
Education/Experience: Requires 2 to 4 years of relevant manufacturing or operations leadership experience, including demonstrated success supervising production employees. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Demonstrated ability to develop and adjust production plans, balance labor and equipment resources, coordinate work across shifts or functions, and resolve scheduling and operating constraints.
Demonstrated ability to use SQDC performance information to identify gaps, lead corrective action, and support continuous improvement.
Progression from Production Supervisor I is based on demonstrated readiness and capability, rather than tenure alone.
Disciplined self-starter with strong organizational, decision-making, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Computer Skills: Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to use applicable production, reporting, and enterprise systems.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises hourly production employees and is responsible for work assignments, employee scheduling, training, coaching, performance management, performance reviews, recognition, corrective and disciplinary actions, and employee development in accordance with company policies and procedures.
