Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) – Rural Health Clinic Hours: Fulltime (1.0 FTE) – M-F 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with 60‑minute meal period Position Overview Responsible for providing direct and indirect care of clinic patients including adult, geriatric, and pediatric populations. Assists clinic physician or provider with patient assessment, treatment, care planning, and medical care evaluation by following established standards and practices. Responsible for the preliminary work‑up of a patient before the provider sees the patient. Assists physicians, providers, and staff in coordinating patient care. Functions as primary liaison between patients, staff, and providers. Duties and Responsibilities Greets the patient/family in a professional, friendly manner. “Working‑up” of patients including, but not limited to, vitals; height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, and BMI; chief complaint, completing advanced directive, updating the medication list, and other pertinent personal, family, social and medical history for the patient at each visit. Prepares patient for, sets up for, and assists physician or provider with examinations, tests, and/or procedures as applicable, including, but not limited to castings, suturing and minor office procedures. Provides direct and indirect care to patients, demonstrating knowledge of techniques and procedures while considering the specific needs of each patient based clinical condition. Administers/refills prescribed medications and treatments as ordered by physician or provider. Maintains accurate patient charges for services and equipment used. Observes and monitors patient condition and notifies responsible physician or provider of patient condition and any unanticipated reactions to care provided. Documents telephone encounters, capturing patient data and notifies responsible provider of patient condition and any unanticipated reactions to care provided. Recognizes need for and performs life‑saving measures if necessary. Answers and responds to patient telephone calls, assesses conditions and advises of symptomatic treatment as needed and/or advises patient to schedule an appointment with a provider. Effectively communicates with patients, families, providers, outside agencies, and hospital personnel regarding patients’ hospitalization and/or clinic visit. Works with other members of the care team to maintain continuity of care of the patient. Treats patients with respect and dignity at all times. Provides education for patient and family. Communicates in a way that patient and family can understand. Reinforces education as needed. Familiar with patient’s insurance information and follows rules for that plan for pre‑authorizations, referrals, etc. Obtains pre‑authorizations as needed or delegates to a Prior Authorization Specialist. Refers and schedules patients with other providers outside of clinic as needed. Schedules procedures and tests done outside of the clinic as needed, e.g., diagnostic imaging. Follows up on lab and diagnostic imaging results as needed. Ensures all orders and prescriptions are electronically transmitted or faxed in a timely manner. Cleans, organizes, inventories, and audits supply and pharmaceutical storage areas. Removes outdated items. Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to sterile technique. Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to standard precautions. Conducts monthly supply/pharmaceutical audits and removes outdated items. Assists in inventory and ordering of supplies and equipment. Assists in maintenance of safe, clean work environment. Assists with the general operation of Rural Health Clinic. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. Minimum Education and/or Experience Required Graduate of an accredited nursing program or medical assistant program. Previous patient contact in a medical practice preferred. Additional Qualifications Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with colleagues, patients, family members, visitors, and physicians. Must have patience, tact, and cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as willingness to handle difficult situations. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills (listening, non‑verbal communication, tone, empathy). Must be able to interact with fellow employees in a way that promotes a harmonious and cooperative working environment. Basic computer skills. Ability to learn and navigate Electronic Health Record. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Self‑motivated. Must be able to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate in English fluently. Integrity and ability to work independently. Initiative to take on tasks without being told. Strong attention to detail. Adaptive to change, embraces change with optimism. Ability to problem‑solve, critically think. Ability to prioritize assignments and manage time efficiently. Ability to operate technologies and equipment associated with this position. Must have a service mindset and a commitment to continuous learning. Ability to work outside of regularly scheduled hours if needed. Completion of Mandatory Reporter training (Dependent Adult and Child) required within six (6) months of hire. Licensure/Certification Required American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential or current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Iowa. Other CMA credentials will be considered. Basic Life Support (BLS). May come in contact with blood and other body fluids.
