Lee's Summit Parks and Recreation is an accredited, gold medal award-winning agency with over 45 full-time professionals and over 300 seasonal and part-time staff who provide the Lee's Summit community with dozens of quality recreational opportunities. EOE

$15.15/hourly Responsible for conducting group and private swimming lessons, establishing aquatic skill development, and promoting good water safety habits.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, coordinates and manages group and private swim lessons in accordance with established standards and guidelines; conducts classes according to established schedule and ensures classes are timely and complete, with all materials covered each session.
- Assists in the development and preparation of lesson plans for various levels of swim lessons.
- Demonstrate appropriate skills to participants.
- Organizes class environment to enhance individual and group performance and minimize distractions.
- Ensures teaching and practice areas are in a safe condition, free of hazards, to ensure safety and health of participants.
- Interact with participants and parents/guardians to ensure a satisfactory patron experience and to address areas of concern or need for additional instruction or attention.
- Enforces facility rules and regulations; takes appropriate action in the event of patron incidents.
- Prepares and maintains appropriate reports as assigned, including swim certificates at completion of lessons.
- Maintains safety by following LSPR guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings and mandatory in-service training sessions as scheduled.
- Ensures enforcement of rules and regulations of LSPR.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 15 years of age; and
- Must possess valid American Red Cross lifeguard certification (available through LSPR after hire); and,
- Must possess valid Basic first aid, CPR and AED certification (available through LSPR after hire).
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to communicate with patrons, co-workers, and management/supervisors, professionally and respectfully.
- Ability to maintain self-control and composure and set a professional example for the staff and participants.
- Ability to foster a comfortable learning environment that encourages participants to meet course objectives.
- Ability to adapt teaching approach to the level of experience, ability and culture of participants in order to foster success in achieving course objectives.
- Ability to use corrective feedback to evaluate participant progress and correct deficiencies.
- Ability to understand, analyze and implement ideas and concepts.
- Skills in providing exceptional patron service.
- Ability to exhibit qualities of maturity, cooperation, and good public image, maintaining self-control and composure.
- Ability to accept direction from Management staff.
- Ability to relate to the needs of staff and participants.
- Ability to demonstrate skills of rescue and first aid techniques.
Principal Working Relationships
- Works with Head Lifeguard, Aquatics Supervisor, Aquatics Manager and Superintendent of Recreation to gain overall guidance and direction in the conduct of duties.
- Interact with patrons to provide quality services and experiences.
- Interact with other Lifeguards and the Head Lifeguard to provide quality patron experience.
- Interact with departmental personnel to provide quality services and to satisfy operational needs.
- Interact with patrons and LSPR employees to foster open communication and a positive attitude.
Physical Classification:
- Medium: Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to raise or lower an object from one level to another, transport an object, exert force upon an object so that it moves away from or toward the force, or otherwise move objects.

The physical activity of this position:
- Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
- Feeling. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Fingering. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Hearing. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Kneeling. Bending legs at the knee to come to a rest on the knee or knees.
- Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Pushing. Using the upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
- Standing. Particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Talking. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
The visual acuity requirements include color, depth perception, and field vision:
- The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
