The Head of Investment Accounting Governance is a key role in the delivery of MassMutual’s investment strategy and in this, MassMutual’s purpose: to provide financial well-being to all Americans. We are seeking a results-oriented and highly collaborative professional with the ability to create and lead a team within the Investment Controllership team. This position will the lead the team that is responsible for designing and executing the processes supporting the integrity of the accounting data information from the Company’s securities system.

The Team

This team is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the accounting information received from the Investment Operations securities system. This team will be highly focused on the control environment supporting this purpose. To this end, the team will work closely with its critical partner, Investment Operations. The team will look to leverage technology and resource opportunities to ensure an efficient and effective approach to maintaining these processes. Head of Investment Accounting Systems Governance will lead and inspire the team to continue progressing the operations model and function.

The Impact

Reporting to MassMutual’s Head of Investment Controllership, Head of Investment Accounting Governance will be a member of the Investment Controllership leadership team and a key partner and representative to the operational accounting impacts of the investment operations processes.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly complex general investment account portfolio with diverse asset classes and strategies, this role will build a framework and lead a vision that provides for the effective controls of operational securities accounting.

• Lead the team responsible for ensuring effective controls related to the securities operational accounting, including execution of daily and monthly reconciliations, analysis of data exceptions, and support of system upgrades
• Maintaining control processes and assess improvements by evaluating the end to end impacts to operational securities accounting
• Partner with teams, including but not limited to Securities Controllership, Investment Operations, Treasury, Financial Reporting and ERM
• Ensure the integrity of investment income reporting across periods while owning the calculation and recording of known P&L exposures
• Maintain workflows and operational securities accounting controls
• Partner with stakeholders to meet client needs
• Oversee the effectiveness of the broader control environment for the insurance company GIA
• Oversight of external audits on behalf of Investment Controllership
• Oversight of UAT testing on key external vendor system upgrades

The Minimum Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive accounting, investment accounting, investment controllership, or financial reporting experience within insurance, asset management, banking, or financial services.
• Demonstrated expertise in U.S. GAAP investment accounting and financial reporting.
• Proven experience designing, implementing, and enhancing internal controls, governance frameworks, and operational accounting processes in a highly regulated environment.
• Direct experience supporting a large and complex investment portfolio, including partnership with Investment Operations and other front-to-back investment functions.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related discipline

• Strong analytical skills: ability to analyze financial data sets and tell the story of the data
• Proven ability to complete high quality work efficiently and increase autonomy over time
• Experience in creating and developing teams
• Experience effectively leveraging outsourcing and offshoring arrangementsAble to build and maintain strong working relationships across cross-functional groups
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to express ideas in and articulate in an organized and persuasive manner to leadership, staff, regulatory bodies, etc.
• Intellectual curiosity to continue learning and adding breadth and depth to understanding
• CPA
