Summary This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) - Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (Veterans Integrated Service Network [VISN] 6) - at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem - Virginia under Facilities Management Service. This position supervises the Mechanical Shop in the Maintenance & Operations Department of Facilities Management Service. This position supervises the Mechanical Shop in the Maintenance & Operations Department of Facilities Management Service. Qualifications To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 09/25/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work will involve office work (25%) and physical exertion such as walking - bending - stooping - climbing in utility rooms - crawl spaces - attics - boiler and chiller plants (75%). Such work will require an average amount of agility and dexterity. Responsible for first level supervision of 14 permanent - full time subordinate positions. Assignments involve varied interrelated project and maintenance management tasks in which problems encountered are generally ofa conventional nature but may pose some unusual problems. Work may require employee to make decisions concerning emergency shutdowns or utilities or other vital services during construction. Such shutdowns will be coordinated as effectively as possible to minimize disturbance. Incumbent will be required at times to evaluate existing conditions during maintenance and repair operations and make judgments on site concerning continuation of work. Physical Demands: Project inspections require a great deal of walking - climbing - standing and bending. Inspections may also require carrying of moderate loads such as tools and measuring equipment common to the position. Working Conditions: The incumbent works primarily in an office that is adequately heated - ventilated and lighted; however - he/she may be exposed to hazards common to the maintenance - repair - and construction trades - such as dust - noise and unpleasant odors. The position requires working occasional overtime - in uncontrolled environments - utilizing ladders - heavy equipment - accessing rooftops/crawl spaces - and is regularly exposed to work outside year round in performance of duties. Occasionally is subject to very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous working conditions and exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades - construction - and various types of hospital related infections. Duties This position is a first-line supervisor and provides technical and administrative supervision to the Mechanical Shop - which consists of approximately four pipefitters - one plumber(all at the journeyman level - WG-10) - including one WL-10 pipefitter leader and a WG-11 Medical Equipment Repairer Major duties include but are not limited to: Is directly responsible for and supervises subordinate personnel in the trades of pipefitting - plumbing - mechanical repairs - sheet metal work - welding - and insulation Oversees the safe and correct maintenance and repair of steam and plumbing systems - dietetic equipment - physical therapy equipment - sanitary sewer systems - fire protection sprinkler systems - remote pumping stations - swimming pool equipment - domestic water elevated storage tanks - hot water distribution systems - and medical gas systems Is required to maintain compliance with all fire-safety - life-safety - water management - and VA-mandated laws and regulations at all times and ensures work of all subordinates and contractors on these systems is properly performed - properly scheduled - and properly documented as required Is accountable to management for the quantity and quality of work completed and for efficient and economical work operations Assigns - directs - and reviews the work of subordinates and evaluates their work performance Deals with employees and union representatives on employee suggestions - complaints - grievances - and other matters Obtains and maintains VA certification as a Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) and serves as COR on maintenance and testing contracts and projects as directed by work requirements and upper management Requires daily coordination and interaction with contracted personnel - professional engineering personnel - and other trade shops to meet set deadlines and outcomes Participates in budget planning for Maintenance and Operations - and provides input at various meetings to management - including maintenance level projects - changes to staffing levels - and equipment requirements Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: 7:45am-4:30pm - availability to work weekend and holidays Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Supervisor/PD503150 Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not approved Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized #J-18808-Ljbffr
