Senior Backend Agentic AI Engineer

Location: Phoenix, AZ or New York, NY

Salary: $100,000 – $130,000 per annum plus bonus & benefits

Positions available: 5 positions available across the two sites

We are recruiting Senior Backend Agentic AI Engineers to build scalable backend services and production-ready AI agents for a leading financial services organisation.

This is a hands-on opportunity to combine backend engineering with agentic AI, taking ownership of systems that connect large language models, enterprise data and tools. You will help shape technical decisions and deliver reliable AI capabilities used across multiple products.

What you’ll be doing

• Design, develop and maintain high-performance backend services, APIs and microservices.
• Build and operate AI agents, including workflows for planning, tool use and memory.
• Develop retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines that connect AI applications with relevant enterprise information.
• Build shared capabilities for agent orchestration, LLM integration, evaluation and monitoring.
• Improve system performance, reliability, scalability and cost efficiency.
• Contribute to architecture decisions and technical design reviews across engineering teams.
• Work with DevOps and frontend teams to deploy cloud services and integrate applications.

What we’re looking for

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong background in backend development and distributed systems.
• Strong proficiency in Node.js, JavaScript/TypeScript and/or Go.
• Hands-on experience delivering LLM applications, agentic workflows or advanced ML infrastructure.
• Experience with orchestration frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain or equivalent technologies.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, microservices, asynchronous processing, queues and event-driven architectures.
• Experience with AWS and/or GCP, Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with SQL and NoSQL databases, automated testing and CI/CD pipelines.
• The ability to own complex technical problems and guide engineering decisions across teams.

Experience that would stand out

• Production AI agents incorporating tool use, memory, RAG and evaluation.
• Kafka, streaming systems or workflow engines.
• Financial services or other regulated industry experience.
• Fine-tuning, model optimisation or inference pipelines.
• Contributions to open-source AI frameworks or experience building AI products as an early technical hire.
