The work you will do:

This position will perform minor maintenance and servicing in connection with any type of equipment operated. Uses a variety of tools and performs manual labor. Your specific responsibilities:

• Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
• Cleans and washes equipment.
• After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
• Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
• Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
• Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
• Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
• Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Knowledge of mathematical calculations. Standard safety rules and procedures.
• Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools. Operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles.
• Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment. Read and understand job related materials and fill out reports and forms. Maintain and repair highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures. Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others. Lift, carry and handle up to 50 pounds. Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis. Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic. Work independently. Stand for an extended period of time.

Licensure/Registration/Certification requirements:

• Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL instructional permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
• Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.

Other job-related requirements:

• Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary.
• While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other DMV safety-sensitive functions.
• The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Minimum qualifications:

• Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. A Class "E" driver's license is required at the time of hire. A CDL Class "B" license Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "B" license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
