The Role:

The New York Times is looking for someone to join our Newsroom Operations team. We are looking for someone who can handle the demands of a fast-paced news environment and can work under sometimes ambiguous circumstances.

The Operations Manager will work with Shows and Visuals, but also assist other departments at the center of visual journalism at The Times. The work of these journalists — along with visual efforts across the newsroom — is a pillar of our reporting that has a large and engaged audience. You will help support these journalists with a variety of daily responsibilities and short- and long-term projects and coordinate with this group's other operations managers. You will be responsible for ensuring that day-to-day on-site operational tasks are completed in a timely manner to support the needs of department managers and staff.

The Operations Manager's work is critical in supporting the journalism produced at The New York Times and all tasks, whether daily, weekly or one-off are greatly valued. You will report to a senior manager of Newsroom Operations.

This role will be Hybrid, with a required in-office presence of 4 days a week. The schedule of these 4 days can fluctuate based on the needs of the desks, and during some peak news cycles, you may be required to be on site for 5 days during those weeks.

Responsibilities:

• Support editors during breaking news and timely news events, ensuring that our journalists have what they need to work
• Coordinate, and help plan and execute culture-building activities for the departments held both on and off site
• Manage and approve staff expenses in Workday, communicating and observing policy limits, correcting categorizations and cost centers
• Manage work and vacation schedules, maintain accurate time banks in Workday and work with Payroll to verify timebanks for transfers, departures and annual payouts
• Oversee accounts payable and account receivable for the department
• Be a move coordinator, working with Facilities and other departments on internal desk moves/assignments
• Work with HR and Recruiting teams to assist with position management transactions
• Facilitate Workday management, including onboarding new employees and helping them to get the training, equipment and information they need
• Purchase supplies and equipment, keep track of all departmental expenses, including capital spending and outside vendor spending
• Work in Zip for independent contractor onboarding, sourcing events and purchasing
• Manage and pay freelancers and vendors
• Hands-on management of a variety of tasks that come up: troubleshooting, assisting producers, visuals teams and editors
• Manage set up of departmental special events, and on-site tasks to ensure events are set up properly
• You will organize, prioritize, multitask and work under deadline pressure
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:

• 3+ years of experience in an operational or administrative role
• Work under deadline pressure and be accessible after hours or weekends as breaking news demands
• Professional judgment with respect to detail and confidentiality
• High energy working style and optimistic attitude, with a keen sense of urgency
• Able to work with all levels of management and staff in a highly professional manner; ability to manage the various needs of a team of 100+ employees and leaders

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of training and experience
• Experience with Workday, Zip and the freelance payment system
• Experience with G-Suite
• Willingness to learn and support the team across all tasks.
• Able to research resources, troubleshoot and solve problems
• Calm under pressure
• Patience and a sense of humor

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$85,000 - $100,000 USD
