PLUMBER

Plumber, 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, 12 months a year. Tentative hours are 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Responsibilities Under the direction of a supervisor, design the layout of plumbing systems; install plumbing systems and fixtures; maintain and repair equipment and appliances; test backflow prevention devices; maintain a variety of records. Distinguishing Characteristics Incumbents work independently under limited supervision. They exercise judgment in establishing work priorities, planning/estimating and laying out new installations, determining equipment and material needs, and troubleshooting problems and repairs. Proper work procedures are essential to prevent injury and avoid contamination of drinking water. Employment Requirements Education: Graduation from high school or equivalency. Courses in installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems are desirable. Experience: Four years as a plumber installing, maintaining, and repairing sewer mains, drains, waste and vent piping, appliances, potable water supply pipes, and fuel gas lateral and main lines. OR completion of a California‑approved apprenticeship program and one year of experience performing the above duties. License/Certification: Valid California Class C driver’s license and a clean driving record. Certificate of competence in testing backflow devices issued by Los Angeles County obtained within the probationary period and maintained thereafter. Work Environment Employees work inside and outside in varying temperatures, poorly ventilated areas, wet or damp conditions, confined spaces, heights, and with electrical hazards, moving machinery, sharp objects, fumes, silica or other dust, lead, asbestos, gases, chemicals, odors, toxic materials, explosives, loud noises, vibrations, and in direct contact with the public. Physical Requirements Stand, walk, lift and carry up to 80 lb; climb ladders, stairs and maintain balance. Push/pull up to 150 lb; stoop, kneel, crawl, and bend repeatedly; use fingers, wrists, and hands while twisting or applying pressure; simultaneously use both arms, legs, and hands; reach overhead; operate a vehicle; use a computer and telephone. Rapid mental and muscular coordination, normal hearing and speech, normal vision for depth perception and color discrimination is required.
