Job Description

This Phlebotomist I position focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and processing services in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. The role involves performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling, maintaining specimen integrity, and supporting smooth workflow through troubleshooting, training, and process improvement recommendations. The phlebotomist delivers clear, courteous explanations to patients, complies with all safety and regulatory standards, and contributes to reliable laboratory results by following established procedures.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Demonstrate and utilize proper phlebotomy techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles, adapting technique to patient needs and clinical circumstances.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures to maintain specimen integrity and accuracy of test results.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information to ensure correct patient identification and test ordering.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the original orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
• Package specimens for transport in accordance with protocol to maintain specimen stability and integrity during transit.
• Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following specific procedures outlined by test protocols.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure all documentation is complete and up to date.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as required to support safe and efficient laboratory operations.
• Troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection, labeling, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency and accuracy.
• Assist with training and guidance for colleagues as needed to support consistent adherence to procedures and best practices.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests are performed and appropriate specimens are collected.
• Answer telephone calls promptly and professionally, providing laboratory result information and responding to inquiries within scope of practice.
• Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance policies.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience, including blood draws and specimen collection.
• Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens for transport.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test orders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Strong understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and compliance requirements.
• Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and verification of orders.

• Ability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone within scope of practice.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple specimens and tasks simultaneously.
• Effective communication skills to interact with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory team members.
• Willingness to attend ongoing department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
• Capability to assist with training and workflow improvement initiatives.

Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where phlebotomists perform frequent blood draws and other specimen collections throughout the day. The work environment involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. Team members follow established safety procedures and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, including proper decontamination and specimen handling protocols. The position requires careful adherence to temperature and storage requirements for specimens and consistent attention to detail in a clinical environment. Work hours may align with typical laboratory or hospital schedules, and professional clinical attire appropriate for a healthcare setting is expected.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Danville, VA.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
