Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic

Summary This position is located in the Clement J. Zablocki Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a complexity level 1A facility. The incumbent functions as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Utilities Group of the Facility Management Division. Qualifications To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Your resume must demonstrate experience and knowledge of principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, the use of refrigerant tables, and how to calculate air‑flow and pressure. Experience must include skill in dismantling, repairing, and correctly assembling parts; knowledge of various compression methods for commercial and industrial systems; and familiarity with motors, including analog, electronic, JCI Metasys, Extended Architectural interface, CRC interface, and other older and newer motors. The incumbent must comply with EPA certifications and requirements. The regulations require technicians to observe practices that minimize refrigerant releases and to be a certified technician. You must provide a copy of your universal refrigerant certification. Experience and training of sufficient scope and quality must be demonstrated with detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screen‑out element: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Eligible candidates are then rated against the remaining job elements: equipment assembly – installation – repair; interpret instructions – specifications (including blueprint reading); materials; technical practices; troubleshooting; use and maintain tools and equipment. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer work. All qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, is credited. Responsibilities Location: Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI, within the Utilities Group of the Facility Management Division. Major duties: Installs, replaces, and repairs large and complex HVAC systems, including window air conditioners, heaters, chillers, ice/water machines, walk‑in coolers, freezers, milk coolers, display cases, cold‑top servers, and larger residential or commercial units in various facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, communication centers, and office buildings. Controls and operates complicated motors such as analog, electronic, enthalpy/econcycle, JCI Metasys, Extended Architectural interface, CRC interface, and other new and old systems installed by varying manufacturers. Diagnoses and corrects equipment malfunctions promptly. Improvises solutions to keep equipment functioning during breakdowns until full restoration. Determines causes of malfunctions and performs appropriate repairs. Consults with supervisor on parts replacement, obtains price quotes and delivery information, and prepares purchase request forms for approval. Work schedule: Full‑time Monday‑Friday 7 AM–3:30 PM, with off‑hour availability for utility outages, maintenance, and project support as needed. Position is A‑W‑S eligible for one 8‑hour or 9‑hour shift and one day off per pay period (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). Physical Requirements The physical effort may be large because equipment is often heavy and must be maneuvered into and out of specific locations. Incumbents frequently carry parts weighing up to 50 pounds, hoist or use pulleys for large compressors, condensers, and chillers, and operate ladders, scaffolds, or platforms for installations and repairs. Stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling may be required for extended periods. Working Conditions Incumbents may experience sudden temperature changes during walk‑in freezer work or when working outside in extreme weather. Hazards include cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and other inherent trade risks. Refrigerants are used in large amounts; exposure to refrigerant gases may necessitate face masks and protective clothing to prevent toxic effects on eyes, skin, and internal organs. #J-18808-Ljbffr
