Staff Image Quality Engineer

Overview The Robotics and Digital solutions (RAD) group, part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, is recruiting a Staff Image Quality Engineer located in Santa Clara, CA. The role involves tuning ISP pipelines for robotic endoscopy and leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of objective and subjective image quality metrics and algorithms for camera pipelines. The engineer will partner with cross‑functional teams and surgeons to deliver measurable imaging performance in a safety‑critical environment. Responsibilities Own end‑to‑end ISP tuning for robotic endoscopy and drive tuning changes from concept through verification and release. Develop and prototype image‑processing algorithms for endoscopic video and implement them in the production pipeline. Define, implement, and maintain objective IQ metrics and KPIs aligned to product requirements. Build a repeatable subjective IQ evaluation and correlate subjective outcomes to objective measurements. Lead regular IQ reviews, communicate progress, risks, and trade‑offs to engineering leadership and program stakeholders. Develop, enhance, and maintain tools and test setups for ISP tuning and objective IQ measurements. Create and scale automation for IQ performance testing, metric computation, and report generation. Drive IQ root‑cause investigations and isolate issues across sensor, optics, ISP blocks, firmware, and algorithm interactions; propose and validate fixes. Partner with cross‑functional teams and suppliers to set IQ requirements. Requirements Minimum B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Imaging Science, or equivalent practical experience. 8+ years experience tuning ISPs and delivering image quality improvements for camera products. Strong understanding of imaging fundamentals: optics, sensors (CMOS), noise sources, color science, and image‑signal‑processing algorithms. Hands‑on experience defining objective IQ metrics and designing subjective evaluations; ability to correlate them. Proficiency with data analysis and scripting (C++ and Python preferred). Experience with image‑processing libraries (e.g., OpenCV) and building visualization dashboards. Strong cross‑functional communication skills and experience collaborating with vendors/partners on camera modules, sensors, lenses, and calibration. Familiarity with Linux operating systems. Preferred Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Imaging Science, or equivalent practical experience. Familiarity with medical device quality systems and design controls (risk management, change control). Experience in coaching, consulting, critical thinking, design mindset, design thinking, feasibility studies, and product knowledge. Compensation Base pay range: $134,000.00 to $231,150.00.
