The Machine Shop Helper supports daily operations in a busy machine shop by accurately measuring materials, safely moving products with overhead cranes, assembling shafts to specification, and assisting machinists with a variety of tasks. This role involves general labor, regular use of hand and power tools, and maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area while handling materials up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities:

• Accurately measure materials and parts using a tape measure to ensure all components meet required project tolerances.
• Safely operate overhead cranes to move raw materials and finished products within the shop.
• Assemble shafts and similar mechanical components according to detailed specifications and instructions.
• Assist machinists with a wide range of shop tasks, including setup, material handling, and basic preparation work.
• Use hand tools and power tools to support machining and assembly processes as directed.
• Lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 lbs. as needed throughout the shift.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop safety standards and procedures.
• Follow written and verbal instructions carefully to complete tasks efficiently and accurately.
• Support general labor needs in the machine shop, including staging materials and preparing work areas.
• Adhere to all safety policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe operation of shop equipment.

Essential Skills:

• Proficiency in using a tape measure to take accurate measurements and work to specified tolerances.
• Certified or experienced in operating overhead cranes, or willingness to be trained and certified.
• Ability to assemble shafts or similar mechanical components with attention to detail.
• Comfort using hand tools and power tools in a shop environment.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
• Ability to stand, bend, and work in a shop environment for extended periods.
• Strong attention to detail and a reliable work ethic.
• Ability to follow instructions and assist with a variety of tasks in a fast-paced setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

• Experience working in a machine shop or industrial environment is preferred.
• Experience as a machinist helper or exposure to a machinist apprenticeship is a plus.
• General labor experience in manufacturing or production settings is beneficial.
• Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to different tasks as shop needs change.

Work Environment:

This is a first-shift position running from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with occasional work on Friday until lunchtime to support overtime needs. The role is based in a non-climate-controlled plant where temperatures reflect outdoor conditions, making it hot in warmer months and cold in cooler periods. Personal protective equipment requirements include steel-toed boots, while other PPE such as welding hood, gloves, safety glasses, and jackets are provided. The environment is an active industrial shop with regular standing, bending, lifting, and use of tools and equipment in line with standard manufacturing and machining practices.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Dothan, AL.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
