Principal Biologist

Job Summary The Principal Biologist serves as the lead biological resources professional responsible for planning, conducting, and overseeing biological resource inventories, ecological assessments, environmental compliance activities, and technical reporting. This position provides senior-level scientific expertise, project management, quality assurance, and coordination with clients, land managers, stakeholders, and regulatory entities. The Principal Biologist ensures that biological resource investigations and reports meet applicable environmental requirements and professional standards. Supervisory Responsibilities No Job Classification Call When Needed Duty Station Arizona or New Mexico (Remote Available within those regions) Travel Up to 10% Duties / Responsibilities Lead and oversee biological resource inventories, habitat assessments, wetland evaluations, and environmental field investigations. Plan, coordinate, and manage biological resource projects from initiation through final deliverables. Identify, document, and evaluate biological resources, including vegetation communities, wildlife species, wetlands, and sensitive habitats. Analyze and interpret field survey data to assess the significance of biological resources and potential project impacts. Develop recommendations for avoidance, minimization, mitigation, and conservation measures related to biological resources. Prepare, review, and approve biological inventory reports, technical studies, environmental compliance documents, and related deliverables. Ensure survey methodologies, field documentation, and reporting meet applicable professional standards and project requirements. Collect, manage, and review GPS/GIS data and prepare associated mapping and geospatial deliverables. Serve as the primary technical resource for biological and ecological matters on assigned projects. Coordinate and communicate with clients, project managers, environmental specialists, land managers, and other project stakeholders. Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and quality assurance review for biologists and field staff. Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and proposal development while ensuring timely completion of project objectives. Required Skills / Abilities Advanced knowledge of biological survey methodologies, ecology, wildlife biology, botany, wetlands, and habitat assessment. Strong technical writing and scientific reporting skills. Experience with environmental compliance and biological resource management. Proficiency with GPS equipment, GIS software, and geospatial data management. Strong project management, organizational, and leadership abilities. Ability to work independently and supervise multidisciplinary field teams. Excellent communication and stakeholder coordination skills. Education and Experience Required: Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Botany, or a closely related field. Required: Minimum five (5) years of professional experience conducting biological resource inventories, ecological assessments, environmental compliance studies, and technical reporting. Required: Professional Biological Resource Permit from the Navajo Nation Fish & Wildlife. Required: Demonstrated experience leading biological field investigations and managing environmental projects. Physical Requirements / Work Environment Ability to conduct fieldwork in remote and rugged environments. Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to lift and carry field equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field assignments.
