Work Schedule: 10:00 am – 10:30 pm with every 3rd weekend rotation. 2 holidays per year.

Job Summary:

Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Maintains accountability for his/her own practice; provides nursing care for patients; participates in patient and family teaching; and provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient care team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the acute care setting. The Mid-Shift Registered Nurse serves as the primary triage nurse for both the Emergency Department and Urgent Care, ensuring patients are assessed promptly, prioritized appropriately, and directed to the appropriate level of care. This role also supports departmental quality initiatives through post-discharge follow-up calls and visit charge review while assisting with direct patient care as department volumes and acuity require.

Qualifications:

• Graduate of accredited school of nursing with current WI RN licensure in good standing.
• Minimum of one year RN experience (or equivalent) required.
• Minimum of one year ED experience preferred.
• Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC (or similar trauma certification) or willing to obtain within 6 months of hire.

• Meets OMC health requirements

Responsibilities include:

• Serves as the primary triage Registered Nurse for both Emergency Department and Urgent Care patients.
• Performs rapid assessments and assigns acuity utilizing the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) and departmental triage standards.
• Prioritizes patient flow to ensure patients receive timely evaluation and treatment based on clinical need.
• Collaborates with registration, ED clinicians, and Urgent Care clinicians to direct patients to the appropriate care setting.
• Initiates standing nursing orders and protocols when appropriate.
• Performs 24-hour post-discharge follow-up calls according to departmental standards, documenting findings and escalating concerns to the appropriate clinician.
• Reviews Emergency Department visit charges for accuracy and completeness to support appropriate documentation, billing, and reimbursement.
• Assists with patient care in the Emergency Department as volumes, acuity, or staffing needs require.
• Supports patient throughout stay by coordinating with clinicians, radiology, laboratory, and ancillary departments to reduce delays in care.
• Assists with department quality improvement initiatives related to patient flow, patient satisfaction, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
• May float to Med/Surg unit during times of low ED volume as needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Perform essential functions of a Registered Nurse

• Skilled in use of basic patient care equipment and supplies
• Demonstrate and maintain required competencies.

• Knowledge of infection control practices and their relation to patient care outcomes
• Accuracy and attention to detail in performing all job duties.
• Assess multiple systems, develop a nursing plan of care, provide intervention and education, and assess outcomes of patient care.
• Ensure that all physician orders are transcribed accurately and carried out as soon as possible.
• Effectively participate in the interdisciplinary care team
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with patients, family members and co-workers.
• Communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• Maintain patient confidentiality as outlined by HIPAA and OMC policy.
• Provide age appropriate and culturally appropriate care.
• Participate in the orientation process of new staff.

Physical Requirements for the Role:

• Stands and walks up to eight to twelve hours daily while performing patient care and treatment activities.
• Squats and kneels occasionally, reach to shoulder height occasionally, use manual dexterity to perform care/treatment activities, and use visual and auditory acuity to see details
• Ability to lift independently up to 50 pounds as well as push and pull up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to lift, with assistance, over 100 pounds daily.
• Use a computer for 2 to 4 hours or more a day for EMR documentation.

Work Environment:

• Provides patient care in a hospital nursing department.
• May be exposed to hazardous substances, harmful physical agents, and infectious agents that exist in the patient care areas.
• May be exposed to toxic substances brought in by patients exposed elsewhere.
