ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Must be able to perform all job functions and duties that are required of the Residential Instructors; must be able to lift and transfer 70-75 pounds. Create a learning environment, develop strategies to help residents cope effectively with social, emotional, and physical situations in daily living, and facilitate independent performance in these areas. When qualified as Medication Certified, administer medications to residents at prescribed times according to Medication Administration policy; document administration; report all errors of medication dispensation or documentation. Follow written dietary plans for each resident; assist with the preparation of meals and purchasing of supplies. Maintain the cleanliness of the home, inside and outside. Assist with all laundry care. Use own personal vehicle to transport residents to and from a variety of community based outings as requested; vehicle must be properly maintained and adequately equipped with gasoline. Attend and participate in required staff meetings. Successfully complete all in‑service training required for the position within timelines and participate in all other trainings, as assigned. Maintain a current CPR, First Aid, PMT and DDS Med Administration Certification during employment. Follow agency policies including but not limited to confidentiality, dress code, and hygiene. Be knowledgeable of residents’ preferences and life plans. Respect the rights of the resident. Seek out and use residents’ preferences and choices in planning, developing, and implementing activities. Provide supervision, support and/or training to residents in each skill area as indicated within Individual Plans and in general activities. Access medical support as needed—including scheduling and/or transporting residents, attending appointments, accurately sharing information with appropriate personnel, and obtaining medication. Maintain a safe environment by practicing safe work habits and adhering to agency safety policies. Document and maintain information, including IP, Progress notes, Incident reports, Health/medical issues, Money/financial records, and reports. Respect residents’ confidentiality by sharing information only with written consent of the consumer or guardian. Maintain ongoing communication with families, guardians and interdisciplinary team members. Advocate for residents in the community and workplace by maintaining both oral and written communication. Notify day support staff, physician/nurse and parent/guardians regarding a resident’s illness or accident; ensure provision of medical care or other treatment. Work as a team member, providing support and assistance to other staff members within the program. Provide exemplary services by actively supporting quality improvement initiatives. Perform other work‑related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or other management as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires physical exertion and moving about including bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, kneeling, and reaching. Lifting objects up to 50 lbs is typical; occasional lifting or shoveling of 75 lbs may be required. Physiological restraint of residents using appropriate PMT techniques may also be required occasionally.

MENTAL / VISUAL DEMANDS

Frequent mental and visual attention is required in working with residents. The work may be occasionally repetitive and requires alertness and concentration. Listening and communication may require more intense focus, especially when dealing with small groups of residents or negotiating among them.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS / RISK

The work involves moderate risk requiring special safety precautions, exposure to blood or bodily fluids, aggressive behaviors, etc. Employees may be required to use PPE such as gloves, masks, and other gear. The magnitude of bodily injury resulting from work hazards is moderate.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid CT Driver’s License with a good driving record; own a vehicle that is properly registered and insured. Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR, First Aid, PMT, and Medication Certification within regulatory and time‑frame requirements.
