Certifications: Certification as Histologic Technician by ASCP Board or eligible. Must obtain within six months from date of hiring.
Must-Have: High School or GED Diploma. Successfully completed an approved program in histological technique or equivalent.
Description:
Collects and prepares specimens for testing procedures.
Prepares, embeds, cuts, and stains microscopic slides from surgical and autopsy specimens for examination under the supervision of a Senior Technologist.
Schedules may require rotating holidays.
Candidates will have the opportunity to utilize or learn multiple skills including embedding, cutting, and special stains, as well as immunohistochemistry.
Experience with equipment such as processors, microtomes, and stainers is a plus.
Performs and evaluates histological procedures.
Prepares microscope slides from surgical and autopsy material, embedding, cutting, and staining.
Manages adequate specimen records.
Handles preparation and evaluation of routine and special stains.
Files slides and paraffin blocks appropriately.
Prepares slides for immunoperoxidase stains.
Assists in renal biopsy procedures as needed.
Records blocks, slides, and stains accurately.
Maintains a clean work area.
Organizes work effectively and communicates with other departments.
Processes frozen sections from surgical and autopsy material.
Prepares, cuts, and stains frozen sections.
Assists in gross pathology examinations of surgical specimens and collects specimens as needed.
Participates in quality assurance activities and continuing education programs.
Participates in supply management for the section.
Engages in quality control functions for histological procedures.
Records and maintains quality control records.
Helps in maintaining the chemical inventory and safely stores chemicals needed for the lab.
Prepares solutions and special stains, following safety procedures.
Supports a positive work environment while adhering to hospital and departmental policies.
Maintains confidentiality and utilizes proper safety equipment.
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of equipment.
Must be able to work under intense mental concentration or stress.
Utilizes good judgment when making decisions that impact patient care.
May be required to accept shifts outside of regular schedules as departmental needs arise.
Must have visual acuity to see monitor screens, computers, and hard copy materials.
Must be able to hear and verbally communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time, up to 2 hours.
Must have a functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 50-60 pounds.
Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and apply proper body mechanics when transferring and transporting supplies or equipment.
Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds as per job evaluation.
