The Head of Casualty is responsible for developing and executing strategic and tactical business plans that advance the Wholesale strategy, strengthen underwriting performance, improve governance and operational controls, and drive profitable growth. This leader brings deep knowledge of Primary and Excess Casualty lines of business and translates financial, market, and operational insights into a clear strategy for internal teams, field leaders, brokers, and external stakeholders. The role also leads a portfolio of strategic initiatives, including technology transformation efforts, that build new capabilities, improve productivity, and position the business for its next phase of growth. This role reports into the Global Specialty Head of Wholesale Property and Casualty. Key Responsibilities Strategy, Business Planning & Execution Develop and execute strategic and tactical business plans that support Wholesale priorities and profitable growth objectives. Translate deep understanding of Wholesale lines of business into a clearly articulated strategy for internal teams and external audiences. Lead business case development, project execution, and delivery for strategic initiatives aligned to the Wholesale strategy. undefined Financial Performance & Portfolio Management Analyze financial performance across each line of business, identify trends, and use insights to shape future strategy. Review countrywide results to evaluate field execution and recommend or implement corrective actions as needed. Develop recommendations that improve profitability, productivity, governance, and operational control effectiveness. undefined Market Insight, Field Engagement & Customer Focus Partner with Field Leadership to understand marketplace trends, broker dynamics, customer needs, and competitive pressures. Anticipate customer needs and recommend proactive actions related to product, appetite, process, and go-to-market strategy. Qualifications 15+ years of progressive underwriting leadership experience across Excess and/or Primary Casualty; E&S and admitted market experience strongly valued. Demonstrated success leading large underwriting portfolios with P&L accountability and strong financial outcomes. Proven experience operating as a senior business leader with accountability for strategy, financial performance, talent, operations, governance, and execution across a complex business. Demonstrated ability to lead through transformation, including operating model redesign, technology adoption, workflow simplification, and change leadership. Strong commercial orientation with the ability to identify growth opportunities, evaluate market dynamics, and make disciplined trade-offs across profitability, risk, and scale. Strong market presence and credibility with brokers, senior leaders, and cross‑functional partners. Track record of building, developing, and retaining top underwriting talent while preparing successors for critical roles. Sound judgment, high ethical standards, and the ability to make complex decisions with incomplete information. Executive‑level communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate strategy, priorities, and expectations. This role is a Hybrid work schedule. Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work schedule, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
