Job Details Job Location: SC Scout Motors - Blythewood, SC 29016 Position Type: Full-Time/Part-Time Education Level: High School Travel Percentage: None Job Shift: Any Job Category: Health Care Summary The Industrial Firefighter/Engineer position requires driving and operating fire apparatus, positioning apparatus, operating pumps, securing water supplies, combating and extinguishing fires, performing rescues, providing emergency medical services (EMS) as assigned, conducting fire/safety inspections and education, participating in training programs, and performing station, vehicle and equipment checks/maintenance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Respond to emergency and non‑emergency service requests including structural fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials spills, forcible entries, alarm investigations, rescue and salvage operations, extrication, confined space rescue, water rescue, and high‑angle rope rescue. Attend department training programs covering fire prevention, suppression, rescue, emergency management, EMS, and other related skills or duties directed by the Fire Chief. Safely operate fire department apparatus during emergency responses and daily activities. Perform daily checks and maintenance on apparatus and equipment to ensure operational readiness. Perform assigned shift activities, including equipment checks, apparatus checks, safety inspections, and report problems immediately. Perform duties in a safe manner and report any unsafe or unusual activity and conditions to supervisors. Complete necessary reporting and duties before the end of the assigned shift. Complete project assignments and perform assigned areas of responsibility within a timely manner to meet or exceed deadlines. Acquire and retain thorough knowledge of the service area, interior and exterior, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards, and related items. Be available for recall as determined by the Fire Chief. Respond to EMS medical calls as assigned. Assist in planning and evaluating department facilities, apparatus, and equipment. Assist with public education, public relations, and promoting a positive safety culture within assigned areas. Keep work areas, equipment, and apparatus clean and orderly. Participate in emergency preparedness planning. Provide recommendations and supporting documentation to the Fire Chief for department improvements. Drive assigned vehicles in accordance with NorthStar’s driving policies. Adhere to NorthStar’s and department specific standard operating procedures. Serve as a leader for the personnel assigned to the engine and may serve as the acting Company Officer if required. Perform other related duties as directed by superiors. Qualifications At least 21 years of age. High school diploma or GED. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with employees, hospital staff, fire departments, rescue squads, police departments, central command centers, management, volunteer fire departments, and the general public. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Capability to handle conflict situations with good judgment, professionalism, and courtesy. Certification as Firefighter 2. NFPA 1002 Ch. 4 or equivalent Emergency Vehicle Driver Training or Apparatus Operator (AO) Certification. NFPA 1002 Ch. 5 or equivalent Fire Department Pumper Operations 1. Pass a background check. Successfully complete the department’s physical agility requirements. Complete IS‑100, IS‑200, IS‑700, and IS‑800 within 1 month of hire. Preference for firefighters who are an EMT Basic, Advanced, or Paramedic. CPR certified. May be required to meet additional site‑specific requirements. Driving Requirements At least 21 years old. Valid driver’s license. Pass Motor Vehicle Records check. Meet NorthStar’s insurance requirements to drive company vehicles. Physical Requirements Complete the department’s physical agility requirements, including walking, climbing, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, and balancing over uneven terrain. Good physical stamina and endurance: lift, carry, and balance loads in excess of 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance), climb ladders and stairs while carrying equipment/tools, pull hose lines. Ability to see different color spectrums. Correctable eyesight of 20/20 in at least one eye. Good eye‑hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment, instrumentation, and medications. Ability to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings by visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile observations. Orientation to reality. Stress Factors Frequently: Intense tasks, busy environment. Constantly: High pressure. Working Environment Occasionally: Extended day; available for immediate recall as needed. Constantly: While performing job duties, may work outdoors and be exposed to wet, humid, hot, and inclement weather. May work near moving mechanical parts, under hazardous, life‑threatening conditions such as heights, confined spaces, temperature extremes, crowds, loud noises, limited visibility, hazardous materials, and victims of death or dismemberment. Must function effectively as a team member and/or leader, communicate professionally, and maintain team cohesion. Mental Requirements Frequently: Analyzing, decision making. Remain apolitical while representing NorthStar; abstain from political involvement with outside agencies while on duty or representing NEMS. Speak English clearly and write legibly.
