Inpatient Staff Registered Nurse

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts (up to $200,000) and the eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications English Language Proficiency – In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE) at the time of program completion. Individuals attending a master’s level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s degree may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment after successful completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a state license – the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing – possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for appointment as a nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry‑level nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher than associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth (including Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception – Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements but do not possess the required licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis). Grade determination criteria include Scope – Education and Dimension requirements detailed on the online assessment: Scope Education Nurse I – Level I, Level II, Level III – requires ADN or Diploma in Nursing with corresponding years of experience or a BSN, MSN, or Doctoral degree as specified within each level. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard – please visit Duties The inpatient staff registered nurse provides a full range of care to veterans in the Nursing Service – Acute Care/Medical/Surgical Unit for the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System. This is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility with service lines serving medical, surgical, telemetry, and neurological inpatients and outpatients, with a Level III Emergency Department and multiple community‑based outpatient clinics (CBOC). The RN provides care and counseling in the promotion and maintenance of health and the prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process, which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through services such as case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and the execution of medical regimens including administering medications and treatments. Additional duties include but are not limited to: providing a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process based on ANA Standards of Nursing Practice. Recognizing subtle changes in a patient’s condition and responding in a timely manner by choosing the correct interventions. Demonstrating evidence of critical thinking skills in identifying, analyzing, and resolving patient care problems in the clinical environment. Initiating and implementing an interdisciplinary plan of care based on assessments. Performing ongoing assessment of patient condition and response to treatment. Initiating referrals to other disciplines and/or services as appropriate. Assessing the patient’s learning needs, learning preferences, and readiness to learn. Documenting in a technically informative, complete, accurate, consistent, concise, and timely manner. Evaluating and documenting patient response to interventions and progress toward attainment of goals and expected outcomes. Using the Computerized Patient Record System and any additional systems directed by the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System per policy.
