Certified Surgical First Assistant

Responsibilities Certified First Assistant (CFA) responsibilities include assisting with cleaning, shaving, and positioning patients on the operating room table. The CFA prepares surgical instruments before and after procedures, keeps count of instruments with the Registered Nurse (Circulator), monitors all team members to maintain a sterile field, passes instruments and retracts tissues to help surgeons visualise the operative area, operates suction machines and diagnostic equipment, and learns the use of new instrumentation as needed. Additionally, the CFA assists with procedures by providing appropriate methods of wound exposure and closure, functions as a surgical technologist when necessary, and provides coverage for surgical services as required. Assists with procedures under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon. Provides appropriate wound exposure and hemostasis. Protects patient by demonstrating knowledge of safe tissue handling. Demonstrates knowledge of suturing techniques. Applies knowledge of wound dressing and drains. Performs patient positioning, draping, and tissue handling. Pulls Physician Preference cards according to cases. Ensures availability and sterility of equipment for each case. Selects appropriate instrumentation and equipment based on patient age and size. Assists in patient preparation, positioning, and surgical preps per protocols. Ensures accurate documentation in patient records per department and hospital policy. Navigates clinical information systems to perform job duties. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies for reporting and handling malfunctioning equipment. Monitors supplies and maintains a clean, orderly environment in the perioperative department. Recognises department problems and uses critical thinking to take appropriate action. Prioritises patient care and organizes activities in a logical sequence. Communicates effectively with the perioperative team amid frequent interruptions in a high‑stress setting. Maintains positive interdepartmental relationships while coordinating patient care activities. Serves as a change agent by adopting new processes determined through quality improvement initiatives. Qualifications Minimum Education: 2‑year associate degree or experience as an OR Technician. Required Certification/Licensure: Illinois licensure as a Registered Surgical Assistant and Surgical Technologist; CPR card required.
