Emergency Vehicle Technician IJob DescriptionPosition SummaryThe Emergency Vehicle Technician I (EVT I) is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and outfitting of emergency response vehicles and related equipment. This entry-level technician position supports law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other public safety fleets by ensuring vehicles and systems remain safe, reliable, and operational. Work includes preventive maintenance, emergency lighting systems, sirens, communications equipment, electrical systems, and basic mechanical repairs.The EVT I works under the supervision of a senior technician, fleet manager, or service supervisor and is expected to maintain high standards of workmanship, safety, and professionalism.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesVehicle Maintenance and RepairPerform preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled services on emergency vehicles.Conduct oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, fluid checks, and filter replacements.Diagnose and repair basic mechanical issues involving:EnginesBrakesSuspensionSteering systemsCooling systemsCharging systemsAssist with advanced diagnostics and repairs under supervision.Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.Emergency Equipment Installation and ServiceInstall and maintain:Emergency warning lightsSirensPublic address systemsMobile radiosIn-car camera systemsPrisoner transport equipmentConsoles and vehicle accessoriesPerform basic wiring, soldering, crimping, and electrical troubleshooting.Read and interpret wiring diagrams and installation schematics.Test and verify proper operation of installed equipment.Inspections and SafetyConduct vehicle safety inspections and identify deficiencies.Ensure compliance with applicable DOT, OSHA, NFPA, state, and agency standards.Maintain clean and organized work areas.Properly use shop tools, lifts, testing equipment, and PPE.Follow lockout/tagout and other safety procedures.Customer and Operational SupportCommunicate professionally with agency personnel and customers.Respond to emergency service calls when necessary.Assist with fleet readiness and vehicle upfitting projects.Participate in training and certification programs.Minimum QualificationsEducationHigh school diploma or GED required.Technical school training in automotive technology, diesel technology, electrical systems, or related field preferred.ExperienceOne (1) year of automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience preferred.Experience with 12-volt electrical systems preferred.Experience working with emergency vehicles is preferred but not required.Licenses and CertificationsValid drivers license required.Ability to obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification preferred.ASE certifications are desirable.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge Of:Automotive maintenance proceduresBasic electrical systems and wiring practicesHand and power toolsVehicle diagnostic equipmentShop safety proceduresSkill In:Mechanical troubleshootingElectrical installation and repairUse of diagnostic software and testing equipmentTime management and organizationWritten documentationAbility To:Follow verbal and written instructionsWork independently and as part of a teamLift heavy components and equipmentMeet deadlines in a fast-paced environmentMaintain confidentiality and professionalismPhysical RequirementsFrequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.Ability to work in varying temperatures and shop environments.Manual dexterity sufficient to operate tools and equipment.Working ConditionsWork performed in shop and field environments.Exposure to:NoiseGrease and chemicalsMoving mechanical partsVehicle exhaustOccasional after-hours or emergency call-out work may be required.Tools and Equipment UsedDiagnostic scan toolsMultimeters and electrical testing devicesHydraulic liftsPneumatic toolsWelding and fabrication equipmentComputerized fleet management systemsPreferred AttributesStrong work ethic and reliabilityAttention to detailWillingness to learn advanced emergency vehicle systemsPositive customer service attitudeCommitment to public safety support operationsFLSA StatusNon-ExemptSalary RangeBased on qualifications and experience.DisclaimerThis job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position.
