About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: MedSurg Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Day/Night Rotate Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: RN License required Certifications: BLS required Must-Have: - 1 year of experience required - First-time travelers accepted Description: The unit has a total of 48 beds. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:5-7 during the day and 1:6-8 during the night. Common diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI, AMS, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls/weakness. RNs are required to titrate drips, with exceptions for cardiac drips. Common titratable and set-rate drips include heparin, bumex, and lasix. Charge nurses are available on each shift and will take a patient assignment during the day. During the night, if only one charge nurse is scheduled, they will not take an assignment. Patient care techs are available on the unit with a typical ratio of 1:10-12, which may be higher. Job duties include vitals, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, and turning and positioning patients. Respiratory therapists administer treatments and manage respiratory equipment. RNs are expected to monitor equipment but are not required to perform other tasks related to it. A monitor tech is located nearby to read and monitor telemetry. RNs are not expected to interpret telemetry strips. Shifts are scheduled from 7 AM to 7 PM for RNs and 6 AM to 6 PM for patient care techs. No self-scheduling or block scheduling is permitted; the schedule is created by management. RNs are expected to be flexible and assist in filling gaps in the schedule. Weekend coverage is required every other weekend. Holidays are assigned through a rotation system. There is no on-call or standby requirement. Floating may occur to other medical-surgical or intermediate care units for lower acuity patients. Scrub colors are navy blue for RNs and ceil blue for patient care techs. There is one day of unit-specific orientation with an educator and another day with a preceptor. Cancellations can occur per the division's policy. The charting system used is EPIC.
