Occupational Therapist

University of California , San Francisco

JOB SUMMARY The Staff Therapist, Occupational Therapist II, reports to the Clinical Supervisor, Occupational Therapy and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Therapist works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and adolescent patients may also be treated. The Therapist demonstrates a solid knowledge base within a wide range of diagnoses including general medicine, orthopedics, neurology, and cardiopulmonary in the adult and/or pediatric setting. Under general supervision and within a specific therapy discipline, the Therapist independently performs complex patient evaluations and therapeutic interventions; serves as a mentor to staff and consultant to other medical professionals in patient evaluations, therapeutic intervention planning or intervention requiring discipline specific skills. The Therapist makes recommendations in patient care procedures, protocols or programs related to the discipline specific areas, and instructs therapists and other medical professionals in the theory, application and/or performance of discipline specific skills. While performing job duties, the Therapist may also lead support personnel as allowed by discipline specific State Practice Acts including Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides as well as O.T. and C.O.T.A. students. The Therapist actively participates in departmental and organizational programs, including performance improvement activities, clinical education programs, and inservices and staff development activities. Uses effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette; acts as an escort to any patient or family member needing directions; shows sensitivity to differences of culture; demonstrates a positive and supportive manner in which patients / families/ colleagues perceive interactions as positive and supportive. Exhibits team work skills to positively acknowledge and recognize other colleagues, and uses personal experiences to model and teach Living PRIDE standards. Exhibits tact and professionalism in difficult situations according to PRIDE Values and Practices Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information. Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures. Assumes accountability for improving quality metrics associated with department/unit and meeting organizational/departmental targets. Work Environment Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture. Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility. Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows. Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments. Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft. OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs any other duties related to patient care activities as required. Performs any other duties as assigned by the assistant director and/or director. REQUIRED Minimum of 1 year of general patient care experience with a minimum of 1 years in a relevant multi-disciplinary setting, within the past 5 years. Minimum of 40 hours of professional development activities, 50% of which are continuing education credits (CEUs) or relevant academic coursework. The remainder can include mentoring, Grand Rounds, independent reading, etc. Prior experience as a clinical preceptor and prior experience teaching to a wide variety of audiences. Demonstrates ability to consistently meet clinical caseload requirements of a staff level therapist. Ability to work a minimum of 32 hours and 4 days per week. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to recognize signs of distress. Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification. Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication. Proven ability to mentor professional behaviors including interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills. This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations PREFERRED Prior professional clinical experience in an academic medical center environment. Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team. Ability to work full time, 5 days per week. Possession of a graduate degree or certificate in Occupational Therapy from an accredited professional educational program. 5. REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as an Occupational Therapist by the Occupational Therapy Board of California. POPULATIONS SERVED Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate care based on the needs of a specific individual, including the patient's age. When the therapist is primarily working with patients of age groups other than adult and/or geriatric, additional age-specific performance criteria for neonate, pediatric, and adolescent populations are delineated under the pediatric clinical services mentoring program.
