Job Description Location: District Wide Salary: $46 per hour - 8 hours per day, 260 days per year Closing Date: Open until filled Employment Date: As soon as possible Job Summary: The job of Bus Shop Foreman was established for the purpose of overseeing the vehicle maintenance program for the district; assigning work orders and prioritizing work; determining needed repairs and/or replacements on district vehicles; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; meeting state preventive maintenance program requirements for school buses; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements. Minimum Qualifications SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; and planning and managing projects. High School diploma or equivalent. Required Testing Certificates & Licenses Drug and Alcohol Test Driver’s Physical Bus Driver’s Certificate First Aid Card Class "B" Endorsement Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures. Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: displaying mechanical aptitude. Essential Job Functions Assesses new methods, incidents, complaints and/or accidents for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation. Conducts regular inspections for the purpose of ensuring work quality, performance and production and meeting established standards and expectations. Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements. Maintains shop equipment, maintenance/inventory schedules (e.g. school buses, vehicles, equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items. Prepares documentation (e.g. state bus maintenance log, repairs, maintenance records, purchase orders, work orders, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or information to comply with regulating guidelines. Recommends bus route and/or school closures due to inclement weather for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of students to/from home/sites. Recommends policies, procedures and/or actions (e.g. new vehicles, modifications of present vehicles, preventive maintenance inspections, etc.) for the purpose of providing direction and/or making decisions. Repairs vehicle systems/components, etc. (e.g. electrical systems, brakes, tires, alternators, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in a safe operating condition. Replaces defective vehicle parts/systems (e.g. lighting systems, starters, voltage regulators, distributors, batteries, brakes, glass, body panels, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in a safe operating condition. Supervises department functions including hiring/termination recommendations and planning/scheduling for the purpose of ensuring that the shop functions in a safe and efficient manner. Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services. Working Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 20% sitting, 10% walking, and 70% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
