Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) / Neonatal Physician Assistant - Advocate Children's Hospital | Oak Lawn, Illinois
Advocate Children's Hospital is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) or Physician Assistant with Neonatal Fellowship Training to join our collaborative neonatal team in Oak Lawn. This position offers the opportunity to care for high-acuity neonatal patients in a dynamic Level III/IV NICU environment while working alongside a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering exceptional neonatal care.
Position Summary
The Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides comprehensive, evidence-based care to critically ill and premature newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The APP will perform advanced assessments, develop and implement treatment plans, manage complex neonatal conditions, and collaborate closely with neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other members of the care team.
This role requires flexibility and a commitment to providing 24/7 neonatal coverage through a rotating schedule that includes day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide advanced neonatal care in a high-acuity NICU setting.
- Perform comprehensive neonatal assessments, diagnoses, and management of critically ill newborns.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized treatment plans.
- Perform neonatal procedures within scope of practice and competency.
- Collaborate with neonatologists and the multidisciplinary care team to optimize patient outcomes.
- Communicate effectively with families regarding patient status, treatment plans, and care needs.
- Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice activities.
Schedule
- Rotating schedule including days, nights, weekends, and holidays
- Shift lengths may include:
- 10-hour shifts
- 17-hour shifts
- 24-hour shifts
- Weekend and holiday rotations are required based on unit staffing guidelines
- May be required to provide coverage at Advocate Children's Hospital - Park Ridge as needed
Required
- Graduate of an accredited Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program or
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program with completion of an accredited Neonatal Fellowship
- Current Illinois APRN or PA licensure
- National certification as:
- NNP-BC (required for Nurse Practitioners) , or
- PA-C with neonatal fellowship training
- Current BLS and NRP certification

Clinical
Fulfills billing and productivity metrics requirements where appropriate and maintains relevant documentation
Provides telephone care to various patients
Provides other clinical duties as appropriate
Completes and documents accurate comprehensive, episodic history and physical assessments
Performs ordering, conducting, supervising, and interpreting diagnostic laboratory and imaging studies
Prescribes treatments, and therapies not limited to medications, diet, supplies, prosthetic devices, and equipment
Implements primary and secondary prevention strategies and management of acute and chronic health problems
Provides clear, concise, accurate, and legible information regarding patient care in the record
Formulates a comprehensive plan of care in collaborating with the patient and interdisciplinary team
Professional
Advises leadership in adoption of organizational change, quality improvement initiatives, best practice research and patient care best practice and integrate evidence-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making
Participates in peer review in accordance with privileges, competency assessment activities and maintains appropriate credentialing and privileging requirements
Seeks experiences and formal and independent learning activities to maintain and develop clinical and professional skills and knowledge
Establishes an effective relationship with the interdisciplinary team and the collaborating physician
Advances the profession through presentations and publications

Initiates and revises protocols or guidelines and facilitates organizational change to reflect evidence-based best practice relative to practice setting

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
Proficiency with an Electronic Medical Record
Current licensure in the State of Illinois
Current Illinois Controlled Substance License within 6 months of hire
Eligible for DEA registration; Possession of a current DEA Registration within six months of hire and may vary based on practice site
Current BLS Certification
Current PALS/ACLS certification may vary based on practice site
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Travel may be required
Ability to work varying hours and shifts to meet the needs of Advocate Health Care. This may include on call coverage
Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations.
Able to respond quickly to patient needs and work at a fast pace
Routinely works with potentially infectious specimens and patients.
Work environment includes probability of exposure to adverse, hazardous or unpleasant conditions while caring for the sick
This position can recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of patient age groups; i.e., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and looks for signs of normal aging.
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
