Genetic Counselor

Genetics - Cancer Center Allied Health, Palo Alto, California Stanford Healthcare is seeking a genetic counselor, ABGC board certified / eligible and with a California genetic counselor license or temporary license, for a relief position of 20-30 hours per week. The role is part of a team of 11 genetic counselors, four physicians and one advanced practice provider providing care to patients with a personal and/or family history of cancer. The genetic counselor will conduct video visits to gather clinical and family history, provide risk assessment for hereditary cancer syndromes, order and interpret genetic testing, coordinate cascade testing, participate in weekly team meetings, and assist with administrative tasks such as triage, report revision, and cross‑coverage. The position is hybrid, requiring in‑office time for the first month with potential transition to a hybrid remote/in‑person schedule. Candidates must be located in California and able to work in office as needed. What You Will Do Collect family history information and review patient medical records. Educate patients about hereditary conditions, genetic contributions, recurrence risks, and guidelines. Discuss genetic testing options, obtain informed consent, and convey results in an accessible manner. Identify genetic risks for family members and recommend counseling/testing. Maintain case documentation and clinical notes. Provide referrals to specialty services. Collaborate with the healthcare team to deliver timely counseling and testing. Engage in professional development through education, literature review, and conferences. Participate in process improvement projects. Education Qualifications Master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution. Valid California license as a genetic counselor or temporary California license. Experience Qualifications 0 to 1 years of relevant experience. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Develop clinically appropriate counseling plans. Facilitate genetic testing and communicate results. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and families compassionately. Provide clear genetic, medical, and technical information. Provide appropriate referrals. Work independently and apply clinical judgment. Possess knowledge of genetic conditions and disorders. Apply genetic counseling methods and techniques. Knowledge of community support services and funding agencies. Supervise/advise and train other medical professionals and/or students. Develop and present educational programs and workshops. Licenses and Certifications CGCL – California Genetic Counselor License. Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $55.85 - $74.00 per hour. Salary will be set based on factors including internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
