Starting salary for teacher's with a bachelor's degree is $46,500.00. Job Description: Media Specialist

The Media Specialist administers and supervises the building level media program, as well as supervising the Media Clerks, Volunteers, and Student Assistants.

Requirements

• Hold or be eligible for a Missouri Teaching Certificate in Library Media Specialist K-12.

Length of Contract: Teacher Contract plus Extended Contract for Media Specialists

Reports to: Building Principal

Responsibilities

A. Administrative, Supervisory:

• Plan the Media Center program at the individual building level, continually revising and updating goals and objectives as needs and usage change.
• Participate in the interview process and assist with the decision of hiring a new clerk.
• Delegate duties and responsibilities of personnel under their supervision, as well as evaluating their performance.
• Supervise circulation of materials including overdues and billing procedures.
• Prepare and maintain records for the media center budget.
• Coordinate daily operation of the Media Center and computer facilities.
• Inventory the existing print and non-print collection and AV equipment including computers.
• Prepare statistical and informational reports.
• Evaluate physical layout of Media Center and strive to keep it abreast of school needs.
• Keep educationally and professionally informed by participation in professional organizations, reading professional literature, and maintaining current knowledge of district curriculum and national education trends.
• Be knowledgeable about computer applications such as word processing, database, and telecommunication.
• Maintain professional resources for teachers, inform them about new materials, involve them in purchasing decisions.
• Have a working knowledge of national and state legislation affecting the school library media program and apply this to library media center operations.
• Maintain a collection of publisher and AV vendor catalogs in the Media Center.
• Be informed and knowledgeable about school philosophy, curriculum instruction, and the total educational program.
• Attend faculty meetings and other appropriate staff meetings.
• Serve on building and district curriculum and textbook adoption committees.

Collection Development

• Order all print and non-print materials making use of staff and patron suggestions, recognized selection tools, and the district's adopted selection policy.
• Catalog all print and non-print materials and organize the storage and handling of AV materials for convenience, availability, and effective use.
• Evaluate worn and obsolete materials for possible removal from media center inventory.
• Participate in curriculum planning in order to make the collection reflect that curriculum.

Library Skills and Resources

• Serve as public relations manager for the media center. The media specialist needs to seek every opportunity to show the advantage of incorporating the media center into the curriculum of every classroom. Maintain community public relations.
• Become a teaching partner with the classroom teacher, providing library and research skills designed to integrate into the curriculum.
• Provide assistance and instruction to faculty and students in obtaining materials, equipment, and information.
• Foster an atmosphere which encourages student and faculty usage.
• Assist teachers and students in the use of the computer software.
• Assist with student research.
• Assist teachers, students, and staff in the production of supplementary teacher/learning materials.
• Provide orientation of staff and students through inservice programs.
• Convey enthusiasm for books and reading through specific activities and individual guidance promoting the development of reading skills and appreciation.
