Recreation Specialist

Pathways to Public Service Program (PPSP) Cohort 3 Introduction The Pathways to Public Service Program is an initiative that strengthens the pipeline of diverse talent from local colleges and universities into District government roles. The program is designed to provide 12-month public service apprenticeships, professional mentorship, and direct hiring pathways for participants into full-time government employment. Participants gain practical skills and mentorship, while employers benefit from a pipeline of early-career talent, fresh ideas, and coordinated support from DOES and DCHR. Duties And Responsibilities Performs daily inspection of all equipment and facilities to determine degree of safety and security; brings attention to the supervisor of all detected hazardous conditions and initiates work orders for repairs. Coordinates safety inspections and maintenance of facilities and grounds. Provides high quality customer service to visitors of the recreation center by responding to comments, questions, and complaints and renders advice and guidance in personal situations. Prepares daily, weekly, and seasonal schedules of events, programs, and activities. Coordinates the use of the facility by outside groups and DPR programs and ensures that they adhere to the DPR policies and procedures. Plans, coordinates, and leads daily indoor and outdoor recreation programs and/or activities; secures and maintains all materials and equipment for assigned programs and/or activities. Supervises youth and adult athletic activities and helps to maintain order and discipline. Monitors the performance of volunteers, coaches, seasonal employees, and sports officials. Monitors DPR spaces inside and outside the recreation center during times in which direct program facilitation is not occurring. Plans, implements, and assists with special events assists supervisor in carrying out special assignments necessary for the completion of a special event or activity. Qualifications College graduate with a bachelor’s degree in either December 2025 or May 2026. Commit to being a resident of the District of Columbia within 180 days. Specialized Experience: This position requires one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the District of Columbia government. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Licensures & Certifications None Work Conditions/Environment Work is typically performed in an office setting (or cubicle), and the work area is adequately lit, heated and ventilated. Other Significant Facts Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Operating Status: In-person reporting, flexible and limited telework options available upon position eligibility and operational needs. Promotion Potential: No known promotion potential Duration of Appointment: Career Service - Term (13 month appointment) Pay Plan, Series, Grade: CS-0188-09 Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is covered under collective bargaining AFGE 2741. Position Designation This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position. Incumbents of this position are subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC personnel regulations.
